Author Alyssa Rae talks about ‘A Lion’s Pride’ and ‘A Rebel Star’

INTERVIEW

Alyssa Rae was born in Massachusetts and currently resides in a small, historic town in North Carolina. She is a devoted and enthusiastic reader, writer, and movie goer. Her debut novel, A Lion’s Pride, was published in early 2013. A Rebel Star is her second novel.

Alyssa told me more about her book in a interesting conversation we had a few days ago…

author_pic_2015_300dpi

  • First of all, I’d like to ask you who exactly Alyssa Rae is.

“I am 25 years old. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in North Carolina, raised by a half Irish-half Italian family. My family alone gives me enough material to write many books, perhaps one day I’ll focus on that. I love to write, play the piano, and think up stories for young adults.”

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I’ve always loved writing. As soon as I was able to put a pen to paper I would write these silly, sometimes awful, poems for my Mom. In high school I took creative writing and journalism classes. I had so many notebooks filled with short stories and story ideas that one day I decided I just needed to finish one. I picked the story that had the most material and a year later I published A Lion’s Pride.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“I self-published both of my books using Amazon’s Createspace platform. Createspace makes publishing very fast and easy, especially for someone with little or no experience with publishing.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“None of my main characters in either book are based on people I know, but several of my friends and family members have made appearances as minor characters.”

  • What genre are your books?

“My books are written for teens and young adults. Both feature strong, independent, young women, action, and a little bit of romance.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

A Lion’s Pride will always be special to me because it was my first completed novel, but I have truly enjoyed immersing myself in the Ogoni people’s struggle featured in A Rebel Star.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I always outline my stories in bullet points first. I make a list of all the characters and the major events and their details so I have something to reference while I am writing. The very first chapter that I write is the ending; I have to know where the story is going to take me before I can start the beginning. I also don’t write everything in order. I like to start with writing the scenes that are the most vivid in my mind. I can always tweak them later if I decide to make changes to the story.”

  • What are your current projects?

“I am currently working on the second book of the Rebel Star series. I am also working on the first novella for the series which will be written from Danny’s point of view.”

  • What’s next for you?

“I really enjoy writing for teens and young adults and am hoping to publish many more books within this genre.”

‘Missing Andy’ author, Lori A. Moore on her new book ‘Oh Ship!’

INTERVIEW

Every author has a moment in their lives that lead them to choose the path of storytelling. Each of them has an interesting story to share about that moment, but what Lori A. Moore (author of ‘Missing Andy and ‘Oh Ship!’) shared with me is one of the most interesting how-I-became-an-author stories I’ve ever heard.

Here is what Lori told me in this fun intereview…

Moore Headshot 1

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I didn’t! My former husband died in 2008 and a friend suggested that I journal as a way to deal with my grief. I turned that journal into a book about dealing with grief after the loss of a loved one in the book, ‘Missing Andy: The Journey From Grief to Joy’.

  • Was getting published hard?

“Surprisingly, no. It might be hard for some to understand or believe, but I’ll tell you how it happened. I was asked to share my testimony at a church in a neighboring state. After the service was over, a woman walked up to me and said, “God told me you’re going to write a book.” To make a long story short, she had even mentioned the name of a publisher she had researched. After my former husband died and I was journaling, I remembered the name of the publisher that the woman had said, looked them up on the internet, submitted my manuscript, and you could knock me over with a feather because they accepted it and offered me a book contract.”

High Res Oh Ship book cover

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Yes, all of them. My first book, From Zero to Christian in Just 35 Years, which I wrote simultaneously with Missing Andy: The Journey From Grief to Joy, is about me and how it happened that I walked into church for the first time in my life at age 35. ‘Missing Andy’ is about the loss of my former husband. My first children’s book, ‘Grady the Gray Cat Gets Adopted’, is about our cat, Grady, who we adopted from the Humane Society and the second children’s book, ‘Hannah the Hedgehog Goes to Heaven’ was written about how to deal with the death of a pet because of my losing two of my precious cats in a two year period. My most recent book, ‘Oh Ship! Tales of a Cruising Chick and Other Travel Adventures’ is about my visits to 50-something other countries and my next book, to be released in Summer 2016, has characters fashioned after real people.”

  • What genre are your books?

“Apparently I’m a ‘mutt’ author because two are Christian Living, two are Children’s, one is Travel Humor, and one will be Suspense.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“Can a parent pick a favorite child? Geesh! Okay, if I HAVE TO pick one so far, I’d say ‘Missing Andy’ because readers have given me so much feedback about how it has helped them and I meant it also as a tribute to a wonderful man.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Routine? You haven’t met me, have you?!”

  • What are your current projects?

“Depending upon the success of ‘Oh Ship!’, I hope to write a sequel, ‘Oh Ship 2: More Ship Happens’, as I continue to travel and experience new adventures.”

  • What’s next for you?

“So many ideas, so little time.”

Joanne Jaytanie, author of ‘P.I~I Love You’ and ‘Christmas Ivy’, talks about writing

INTERVIEW

Joanne Jaytanie is an author of romantic suspense, paranormal, and contemporary romance books. Her stories are full of twists of plot and turns in her character’s lives. Joanne’s heroes find themselves involved in many troubles while building an everlasting relationship, that’s why each of her books is an exciting reading experience.

Recently I had a little chat with Joanne. Here is what we talked about…

picture1

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I’ve loved writing since my freshman year in high school. But instead of following my dream, I went to college for business and got my BA. I spent years working in business administration, personnel, and finance for a variety of companies, including our own business.

Ten years after we started our accident reconstruction firm, my husband decided he had enough of running his own company and longed to return to marine engineering. That was a difficult time for me. Along with dealing with the loss of our business, I found myself with no job and no direction for what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. So I focused on my love of dogs. I went back to the obedience ring and then became infatuated with the breed ring. I have owned Dobermans for thirty-four years, bred and showed them for fifteen years. During my showing days I toyed with the idea of applying for my Conformation Judge license. All the while the need to write constantly pushed at me.

One day, while filling out part of my judge application, the thought occurred to me, if I continued on my present course I would be completely engulfed in the dog judging world and my writing would once again be pushed back to – some day.  I finally realized that if I didn’t focus on my dream today, it would slip away forever. I didn’t want to wake up one day and wonder why I never worked at the one thing I loved most to do.

My primary genre is romantic suspense with paranormal elements, which of course is one of my favorite reads. Because of my love of Dobermans and the fact they are a large part of my life, I wanted to incorporate them into my writing. By blending my love of Dobermans, suspense, and paranormal, The Winters Sisters came to life.

I love writing. I do it when I’m sad, happy, busy, and lonely. Writing makes me happy. I submerge myself in the world of my characters. I live and breathe their lives and marvel at their decisions and predicaments. How lucky am I to know what it is I want to do ‘when I grow up’ and to absolutely love doing it.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“My characters are all created by me. However, I do have a habit of incorporating certain traits from individuals in my life, past and present.”

  • What genre are your books?

“My Winters Sisters series is romantic suspense with paranormal elements. Romantic suspense is my primary genre.

Most of my novellas are contemporary romance, with the exception of my new story, P.I ~I Love You.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“I would have to say Chasing Victory, because it was my debut novel. Although as I continue to write the Sisters series I find myself enjoying each new journey even more.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I guess my specific routine is to set aside time each day to put words ‘on the page.’ I try to write in the early afternoon, although I find I am usually most productive in the evening. If I’m on a roll, I often been known to write until two in the morning.”

  • What are your current projects?

“I am currently working on book four for The Winters Sisters Series. This is a shorter novel. The main characters are Kenzie, who is not related to the sisters and Logan. I’m planning on releasing this novel by the end of February.”

  • What’s next for you?

“Next for me is to pursue the indie route for the next year. I’m learning all about the production end of the business. While it’s overwhelming at times, I thrive on the challenge.”

The mysterious Mr Roy Albert Andrade: author of ‘Cultivating the DNA of Crime’ and ‘Virula: Renaissance Outlaw’

INTERVIEW

Roy Albert Andrade is an author. Roy Albert Andrade is a stock market investor. Roy Albert Andrade is a cosmopolitan. Roy Albert Andrade is a mysterious personality surrounded by an air of intrigue. Roy has gained notoriety on Facebook and Twitter and capitalized on his popularity by releasing his first novel, ‘Cultivating the DNA of Crime’. To the delight of his many fans worldwide his second novel, ‘Virula: Renaissance Outlaw’ followed soon after.

So my first question to him couldn’t be any other than…

1
Roy with famous actor, Danny Trejo

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?
“I graduated from the University of Phoenix with an Associate of Arts with a concentration in Business Foundations back in 2011, I think (LOL) and decided that I would start-up a business in the automotive industry. I later decided it would be best if I ventured into various industries, so, I invested financial capital into the stock market, and later pursued a career as an author, which, has been an exciting experience.”
  • Was getting published hard?
“Getting published was not going to be easy, but, it was not going to be impossible. I wrote Cultivating the DNA of Crime and presented it to college students of UCLA as a short survey, which I paid each participant $50 at a Westwood, California coffee shop for their feedback. And 8 out of 10 people actually enjoyed reading it. I knew this was going to be a profitable, yet, challenging career. K1LLER, Inc. of Beverly Hills, California published the book on May 5, 2014.”

a
A cosmopolitan’s life

  • Are your characters based on people you know?
“Yes and No. (LOL) I build characters around people I know, and with the help of a little imagination, I create the dialogue.”
  • What genre are your books?
“Cultivating the DNA of Crime and Virula: Renaissance Outlaw are fiction novels. However, I intend to write different genres, such as, science fiction, romance, fantasy, mysteries in the future. There is more to life than simply writing about crime, so, I know the books I write in the future will be quite interesting, and entertaining, because I am cosmopolitan.”
  • Which of your books is your most favorite?
“Man! That’s a hard ball question to answer. Can you repeat the question? (LOL) It would have to be a coin toss decision, because both books are really intriguing. I have to be brutally honest, these books are packed with excitement, adventure, and most importantly, information.”
  • Do you have a specific writing routine?
“I like this question! I sure do. Funny that you ask. (LOL) I write whenever it’s convenient. I have a number of activities I’m involved in day-to-day, but, when I focus on writing, I get [expletive] done. I get to work! I write, and write, and write until I feel I’ve accomplished what I would have in a month’s timeframe, all in one day. Seriously! Truthfully speaking, I really do enjoy writing, but, I also have to remember, it’s not my only source of income.”

Cutivating_the_DNA_of_Crime_BC

  • What are your current projects?
“I’m invested heavily in the stock market, and other profitable ventures, but, as far as books, I am working on a manuscript that’s going to be published as a second novel of the Virula: Renaissance Outlaw series.”
  • What’s next for you?
“To continue writing and publishing as many books as possible can before I die. The Roy Albert Andrade brand is growing rapidly, and I know sooner or later other people are going to want to work with K1LLER, Inc. Thank you for this interview, it was a pleasurable experience.”

Thank you, Roy! That was a FUN interview!

Chris Mason and his ‘In The Box’ book series

INTERVIEW

Chris Mason is an extraordinary person. For the last 20 years Chris has been a house husband raising three kids with special needs. During this time he received his Bachelors in Psychology and a Master’s in Education. Chris is also the author of ‘In the Box’ book series* which has a very interesting story behind.

chris_photo

  • So, how did you decide to pursue a writing career?
“Due to the fact that all my children went to an online charter school, I had to find ways to save money and found many free resources through the internet. In fact I still think it is funny when I first asked my daughter’s teachers for resources that could help her when she first entered the world of online schooling, I only received 3 websites. I thought 3 websites from 6 teachers was a sad state of affairs, so ‘Tutor in a Box’ was born. That was years ago now. My eldest daughter was in sixth grade then, now she is a sophomore in college.

App_Store_in_a_Box

My other books were born out of two things that happened at the same time. First, my family had to give up cable to save money but my kids still wanted to see the then popular That’s so Raven. Second, my mother came up with Mason Day to teach my kids that they did not need a lot of money to give someone a nice gift. Mason Day was when a person was assigned a family member and had to make them something, spending only 20 dollars. My thought was “Oh my God”. I had no artistic skills like my daughters’ and could not build things like my son, but I did have impressive research skills. So the ‘In the Box’ series of books was born. All are reference guides to the best free stuff in a particular area. The series currently includes:

‘Tulips and Other Stories’ author Mark Noyce on his new book ‘Immortal Space’

INTERVIEW

In 2013 Mark Noyce published his first book, a collection of short stories, known as Tulips and Other Stories. Last August Mark released his second book Immortal Space, and he’s currently working on various other works including more short stories, and a third novel.

During his spare time Mark enjoys a mixture of music and video games, as well as reading. He resides in England and occasionally volunteers at his local Barnardo’s charity shop. It is his firm hope that his stories are as enjoyable to read, as they were to write. He also hopes to reach out to others with his writing.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of having a little chat with Mark and I found out how much an interesting person he is. Here is what we talked about…

51FMSMw0FkL_SX750_SY470_

– Who exactly is Mark Noyce?

“I’m just a small time writer from England. Almost the exact centre actually. I write, read, play games, and listen to music. I’m a great listener but not so much of a talker unfortunately. The upside is that because I take in so much of the world around me I find it easier to create a whole world of my own in my books. I just then have trouble talking about it to others. No one can find you if they don’t know you exist so you can see how that can be bad.”

– How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“One of the reasons I decided to pursue writing was because of my depression. Here’s a small secret; I was never actually very good at writing when I was in school. I was never as imaginative as I am now. So I always thought I was a bad writer. Then one day I started writing my emotions out and writing a blog. The people who followed the blog encouraged me to write fiction and it’s because of them I gave it a go. It turns out I’m actually really good at it. Nearly everyone who reads my writing has enjoyed it and you can’t please everyone.”

BookCoverPreview

– Was getting published hard?

“I’m self published so I didn’t have much difficulty getting published. It’s not all that easy though as you still have to format the book properly to get self published. Actually there are some platforms that I’m still not published on because I just can’t get the document of the book to format the way they want. That can definitely be difficult. I never attempted to get published traditionally because of my self-confidence issues so I can’t speak about the publishing world. I know the books are good enough, but you can quickly forget that during a three month waiting period.”

– Are your characters based on people you know?

“I think everyone takes a bit of themselves and puts it in their book. One quote I like about writing is, and I’m paraphrasing, that the author shows you more than they intend. Sometimes a spade really is a spade and sometimes it isn’t, even when the author is sure that it is. The two main characters, Trent and Geoff, are sort of based on myself. One of the female characters is based on my female friend too. Though I’ll never tell her which one.”

– What genre are your books?

Immortal Space is a science-fiction adventure book. It’s more fiction than science though. It appeals more to people who like fiction as a whole. Though science buffs will still enjoy it. One of the biggest fans of the story is a computer geek friend of mine who has enjoyed pointing out the flaws in some of the technology but he still loves the story and characters as a whole.”

– Which of your books is your most favourite?

“My favourite book I’ve written is my short story collection Tulips and Other Stories. I’m very proud of some of the stories in there, especially Tulips and A Conversation With God. I feel bad about Tulips at times though as two people who have read it are parents and said it made them cry.”

– Do you have a specific writing routine?

“When I write I put my butt in my seat and try not to leave it until I’m done. I also listen to a music playlist I have made on iTunes. I have two for writing; one filled with happy and fast paced music that keeps me perky and energised. The other is a playlist of sad songs to help get me in the mood for particularly tragic scenes. I’m a very empathic person so I find music greatly influences me in all aspects, not just my writing.”

IS_Full_Cover

– What are your current projects?

“I’m currently working on my next novel. It’s a fantasy adventure I call The Spirit. It’s set in a world where people have a Spirit that is an entirely separate entity. What you think is your intuition is actually another being that lives inside you. Of course that’s just the premise and the story itself will be a lot more than that.”

– What’s next for you?

“What’s next is to promote Immortal Space more and get through The Spirit. I have ideas for even more books after that. So I shouldn’t expect to stop writing any time soon. I just do the best I can with what I have, and what I have is the ability to write.”

Casey Sheridan on writing erotic stories and ‘Sirus Bandai – The Invisible Bandit’

INTERVIEW

Like most authors, Casey Sheridan began writing when she was very young. It was later in life when she read her first piece of erotica and it was on a dare that she wrote her first erotic story.

Casey enjoys writing erotic, fun, and romantic fiction with unique story lines.

You can find her books through Amazon and Smashwords. Her short fiction is published on various erotic websites such as The Erotic Woman and Every night Erotica.

Her title, Ruby Red Metallic was an EPIC eBook Awards 2012 Finalist.

An introvert and lover of chocolate, Casey is happiest when writing. She enjoys watching movies, reading, and listening to music. She loves animals and volunteers to care for local feral/community kitty pals.

Recently Casey and I had an interesting little chat and here’s is what we talked about…

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I’m not sure I decided to pursue writing as a career. I think it chose me. I submitted my first short story to an online women’s site, and even though my story was rejected, I wanted to have my writing up somewhere. I kept writing and submitting working until something was finally accepted.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“I wouldn’t say getting published is hard, but it does take persistence and attention to detail. The first thing a person needs to do is learn the craft of writing, then write, and write a good story.”

Number 69 650x429

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“In some ways, yes. I think every author takes traits from the people around them to build their characters.”

  • What genre are your books?

“My books generally are erotic and fun with some romance and maybe some suspense mixed in.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“That’s a hard one to answer. I think I’m proudest of Sirus Bandai – The Invisible Bandit.”

  • Do you  have a specific writing routine?

“Not really. I do like to read over what I wrote the last time just to get my mind focused.  Sometimes, I will play a game of solitaire on my computer before even doing that just to clear my head of the daily stuff so I can focus.”

  • What are your current projects?

“Right now, things are on hold until I finish remodeling (sort of remodeling) the living room and kitchen in my house. Things are in total disarray. After that, I’ll be finishing up Secret Inspiration which is an erotic romantic suspense. I also have a short story, Art Lessons that I’d like to find a home for or expand on. And I have Ruby Red Metallic that I’d like to get republished since Breathless Press sadly closed. I have a full plate.”

  • What’s next for you?

“Well, like I mentioned, I need to finish up Secret Inspiration. After that, I have a possible series I’d like to try, but I haven’t worked out all the bumps yet. Basically, I’m not sure what’s next. ☺”

Sci Fi crime author Gary Starta on his thriller book ‘Dead Market’

INTERVIEW

Gary Starta is a former journalist who studied English and Journalism at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

His love for science fiction compelled him to write his first novel ‘What Are You Made Of?’ published in 2006.

Starta foresees a near future where humans will be forced to decide if intelligent machinery is indeed a life form. The line between biological life form and mechanical life form continues to be examined in 2010’s ‘Gods of the Machines’.

Demon Inhibitions along with its preceding Caitlin Diggs (series) novels, ‘Extreme Liquidation’ and ‘Blood Web’ are reminiscent of the The X-files television/movie series.

Starta’s crime novella ‘Murder By Association’ blends mystery with forensic investigation. It is a departure from previous books because it contains no science fiction or paranormal elements. Its follow up is 2012’s ‘Kindred Killers’. Additionally, Starta foresees his 2008 novella ‘Alzabreah’s Garden’ – a fantasy romance – as another out-of-the-box effort.

Gary Starta’s latest book ‘Dead Market’ is a horror occult story on Genetic Engineering and it’s the absolute 5 star read.

Recently I had the pleasure to have a little chat with Gary and here is what we talked about…

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?
“I became a newspaper reporter years ago after going to school for a Journalism/English degree. Although I ready many books it wasn’t until I finished being a non-fiction writer and took the plunge into fiction! It was about 11 years ago that I started writing novels and now I have about 15 books altogether.”
  • Was getting published hard?
“Yes. But persistence is key! Keep submitting and then submit some more.”
  • Are your characters based on people you know?
“No, not at all. I want this to be my escape!”
  • What genre are your books?
“SCI FI THRILLER CRIME, or a mix, kind of like a hybrid genre. I call it fiction on the fringe of genre.”
  • Which of your books is your most favorite?
“Wow! They are like children. I’ll say Blood Web, the first Caitlin Diggs novel.”
  • Do you have a specific writing routine?
“Yes, one day a week around late morning.”
  • What are your current projects?
“Writing the first Diggs & Shay novel which is about aliens and printing a human.”
  • What’s next for you?
“Publish the next book in the Camden Investigations series!”

Rebekah Raymond and her new book ‘Life’s Defeat’

INTERVIEW

Rebekah Raymond loves writing dark stories with a touch of romance. Her debut book ‘Life’s Defeat’ is the first installment in the Life’s Series. Raymond lives in Calgary, AB Canada. Rebekah, who identifies herself as a Trekkie and sci-fi buff, is a wife to her once High School sweetheart and mother of a young daughter and son. She is a strong advocate of literacy and literature exposed to all from very young ages.

10931301_906842632693196_5310231456712649315_n

  • Rebekah, how did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I have been writing all my life, that and reading. So, at least on that end, the decision was an easy one. I joined NaNaWriMo and saw that the once short story was becoming a wonderful (dark and twisted) tale. And, after having a look into my own mortality after a friend had passed, I decided I needed to make an effort with my writing, if only to have something to pass along to my children. So, I entered a contest with a local publisher and actually won! It didn’t work out between us, but I knew I needed to continue, so I began to self-publish.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“The process itself, in theory, was easily laid out with self-publishing. However, the waiting with the publisher beforehand was excruciating, the decision to end my contract was worse, and the costs associated with editing/cover design/printing was a bit of an eye opener. Having said that, I don’t think I would have done anything different.”

cover

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“I would like to say no. I don’t have a real person in mind when I write my characters. In fact, many of my characters develop into their own “real” people, with their own personalities, attitudes, peculiarities to the point where they resist me creating stories about them and demand they write/live their own.”

  • What genre are your books?

“This series is predominantly a collection of thrillers, however they hint on horror and romance as well.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“My favorite is actually one that is still being written. It is a backstory novella of one of the characters from Book One in my Life’s Series. I think so far it is going to be my ultimate favorite because the main character is just such a smart-ass. He is loud and proud, boastful, and a real jerk. But he is the kind of jerk that I am really enjoying writing. And his transition to an intelligent, upstanding citizen is quite remarkable.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I write late at night. It is when I am most creative, and when my muse is strongest. I usually grab myself a snack and glass of water, snuggle up on the couch under a nice fleece blanket, place my Ipad on my lap and off I go…”

  • What are your current projects?

“I am working on Book Four of this series, as well as the Series novella. I am also co-writing a historical adventure novel with a long-time literary friend.”

  • What’s next for you?

“Next on my list is to get Book Two and Book Three sent to my editor, published, and launched. They are slated for June and December 2016 although I would love to get them out before then.”
