‘Fractured Angel’ author Ken Williams on books, screenplays and the world of marginalized

INTERVIEW

I’ve read many books but only a few had the raw emotion of Fractured Angel by Ken Williams. The characters weren’t the kind of heroes we find in most novels; they were original and true to life. I found that intriguing and I wondered what kind of a personal story author Ken Williams had to tell.

A few days ago I had the honor to have a little chat with Ken Williams and I got to know more about him. Honestly, I am in awe of his achievements.

Here is what we talked about…

Who exactly is Ken Williams?

“I am a man driven by my experiences and encounters.  The devastating impact of serving with the 9th Marines, THE WALKING DEAD in Vietnam shaped my life.  Recovering on the hospital ship, USS Repose I vowed to work with the poor and those impacted mentally with the stressors of life or simply genes gone haywire.

Following those vows I worked with the homeless in Santa Barbara for thirty years specializing in the mentally ill.  My one constant in my life has been my passion for writing.  As far back as I can remember I wrote.

I also think that the things I experienced in Vietnam and aboard that hospital ship has formed me to always want to serve the marginalized.  I am deeply connected to them including those suffering, not only from mental illness, but also poverty and people caught in the brutality of war.”

How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I used to write guest opinion pieces for two different newspapers and an online news service about my work with the homeless.  Of course that was nonfiction.  I gave frequent speeches to different community groups about my work and the homeless.  At one speech a Hollywood screenwriter came up to me and told me my street stories would make a great film.

I wrote several screenplays till I found out how hard it was to move them.  I went back and rewrote them as novels.  Ever since I have been writing novels.

I have always loved writing.  I find it impossible not to write be it opinion pieces, screenplays, short story fiction and poems.  It’s what I do on a daily bases.”

Was getting published hard?

“Incredibly so.  I published three books with iUniverse.  Derek Vesconi, publisher of Sakuri Publishing was the first traditional publisher to take a chance with me.”

Are your characters based on people you know?

“They are usually a compilation of people and events.  I’ve worked with thousands of mentally ill people, addicts, those impacted by alcohol, women beaten out of their homes, veterans maimed by war, hundreds of cops, nurses, shelter staff—so many people.  Each had a unique story to tell.  I try to include their stories, life experiences, tragedies and triumphs in my writings.”

What genre is your book(s)?

“FRACTURED ANGEL, CHINA WHITE and SHATTERED DREAMS, A STORY OF THE STREETS are all contemporary fictions.  The novel I have just completed: GAIA’S REVOLT is speculative, cli-fi.”

Which of your books is your most favorite?

“Each one has a unique and special place in my heart.  FRACTURED ANGEL in particular.  So many times I had to deal with parents looking for their runaway child who, having suffered a mental breakdown ran to the streets.  To this day I’ve kept a picture of a nineteen-year-old girl whose Silicon Valley executive father was referred to me.  The picture he gave me of her was torn in half.  It was taken at a family gathering in the park and the father wished to honor the privacy of the other family members.  I often look into the girl’s eyes for clues to her mental state.  Was she already suffering the first symptoms of mental illness?  Was she even then making plans to run to the streets in an attempt to outrun her disease?  Was her mother in the background fretting about her daughter and the stranger that had stolen into the night and taken her mind?

There is also a passage in the book about a mentally ill combat veteran who circumcises himself.  Like I said earlier, I try hard to convey the life experiences of those which society often has no time for, nor interest in.”

Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I try, and usually do write daily.  Be it my novels, short fiction pieces or poems.”

What are your current projects?

“I am working on a treatment for a Hollywood producer.  Having finished, GAIA’S REVOLT I am halfway through the first draft of its follow up: GAIA’S REVENGE.  I have rediscovered my love of short story fiction, and especially poetry.  Columbia University’s Columbia Journal has just published one of my stories. Leaves of Ink, Haggard and Halloo, Fear of Monkeys, Criterion eJournal and Cecile’s Writers are a few of the other publishers who have accepted my poems and fiction pieces.”

What’s next for you?

“Good question.  One thing life teaches you is to be prepared for the unexpected.  My sudden placements of my poetry was startling and unexpected.  So I would like to see where that journey takes me.  The ongoing tragedy in Aleppo, Syria has driven a lot of my writing lately.  I am waiting to see if the producer likes the treatment enough to engage me for the next step, which is to write a screenplay.  I am deeply committed in finding the right publisher or agent who respects the underlying story of GAIA’S REVOLT, which deals with the devastating impact of Global Warming in the near future.

I am convinced whatever comes next in my life has to do with being a writer.”

Fractured Angel

How would you go about trying to help your daughter who, suffering her first psychotic break at fifteen, is chased by her wounded mind to the streets of Santa Barbara? That is the dilemma that Lynne Swanson faces. Out of her element, and definitely out of her comfort zone for this professional woman, she is forced to seek the help of Kerry Wilson, a social worker for the homeless. Unfortunately for her, Kerry is a rough-necked loner that has no inclination to hold the hand of a woman who he feels is out for a lark at the expense of his homeless clients. The harsh and deadly realities of the streets in one of the wealthiest cities in the world and an attempt to close a homeless shelter just as winter sets in produces a dramatic race against time with the life of Lynne’s daughter in the balance.

‘Ashes Of The Shogun’ author Apollo Butler on self-publishing and his upcoming action thriller novels

INTERVIEW

If you’re looking for an out of the norm action packed thriller, then look no longer. Ashes Of The Shogun by Apollo Butler is nothing like you have read before and you should definitely add it to your TBR list.

Apollo Butler knows how to weave captivating stories, authentic and suspenseful, that will keep you engaged until the last page.

Today I’m beyond happy to host Apollo Butler on my blog and talk about his journey in self-publishing industry, Ashes Of The Shogun , his first novel The Mark of The Steward, and his upcoming novels Dune Raiders and Romans, Revenge Of Adam. 12764787_10156552807245023_7241934907660856539_o

How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“Honestly I started in 2013, January to be exact, but it was by accident. I had this vision keep playing over and over in my head about this great battle and one day I said. “That would be a good book or a movie”. So I spent about one month actually looking for either the film or the book and realized they both doesn’t exist. And it was then that I realized that maybe I should create them!

So I started in 2013 but I didn’t know shit about writing a book and I didn’t have the money to go to school. So I did the next best thing. I copied and paste. Meaning for that year I read about twenty or thirty different thriller novels but took note of how the authors wrote their books.

I paid attention to the way they used punctuations, how they described characters, the pace of the book, how they structured the plot, when they added a twist to the plot, how long did the fight scenes last etc.

So after writing one book, five times in one year, I went and hired an editor and published my book. Only to find out that novels go through at least four editors before touching the shelves. So my first book only went through a development editor but never saw a copy or proof editor. So my first baby (book) was filled with errors and for sake of my brand I pulled it off of the market…. Until June of next year!!!!”

ashes_new_image

Was getting published hard?

“At first it was because I didn’t know shit about the industry! Everything I know now I had to learn the hard way because I didn’t have any mentors here in the Bahamas and all of the writers, that I’ve contacted on Facebook/twitter, seem not to be interested in the people that buy their books!

But after four years in the game I sort off figured things out. My first book cost me about $1,700. Now after realizing that there is so much competition in the market place I now use freelancers to do all of my editing, book covers and other artwork. So I now make sure that all of my books go through four stages of editing.

Now my books only cost $650.00 to produce in English.

$1, 291.00, if I get the book translated into two different languages. But I also had a hard time with the major online retailers like Amazon.

As a Bahamian I am not allowed to have a US bank account and so I can’t use the direct deposit feature that Amazon offers. So I found a way around this.

All of my books are sold directly from my website, as a zip file containing a PDF, EPUB and a MOBI file, and to get them. Folks can use PayPal and boom. They have a great book in their hands.”app_images_resizable_0c833e2b-5d9d-453a-aa17-17b8e7915f93_ebook

Are your characters based on people you know?

“Yes they are but mainly after assholes that passed through my life. You could say it’s my way of getting back at them :-)”.

What genre are your books?

“I only write action thrillers.”

Which of your books is your most favorite?

“Ohhh my first book: The Mark of The Steward! That book shows the events that led to Satan’s exile out of heaven and explains the reason why a false God named Jesus went ahead and enslaved mankind with religion. Yes…. THIS BOOK EXISTS!”

app_images_resizable_ea8b2570-c4c5-4c69-aa44-b9d579139a95_ebook

Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Actually I do. I like to just write a chapter or two first, leave alone, and then come back to it the next day. I’ve found that when I do this I always get new ideas that improve the story.”

What are your current projects?

“My current project is called Ashes of The Shogun. Did you know that America sailed into Japanese harbor, shoved their guns down the Japanese throats and pretty much had their way with them. A few years later Japan went started building its navy.

So in my book my antagonist, Kami Akira, intends to attack America, as a form of revenge, because in his mind. If America had just mind their damn business… There wouldn’t been a world war in the Pacific!

Trust me, this book is action packed!”app_images_resizable_c4be5f57-fce3-4704-89f6-59762ba0faa2_ebook

What’s next for you?

“I’m currently working on my third book titled Dune Raider. This is another action packed thrill and yes, you can see the book cover and the synopsis at http://www.apollobutler.com :-)”

Thank you for reading!”

AUTHOR A.J. KING ON MAGIC, MYSTERY AND ‘THE POWER VESTED IN ME, BOOK 1, THE GATHERERS, VOLUME 1’

INTERVIEW

“A mysterious white haired man materialises one night in the nursery of a maternity ward. He projects lights from his hands on to some of the sleeping babies and then vanishes in to thin air, completely unnoticed.”

As soon as I read those lines, I knew I wanted to read ‘The Power Vested In Me, Book 1, The Gatherers: Volume 1’.

And the moment I reached the last page, I knew I wanted to know more about author A.J.King. I wanted to know about the author whose debut novel would excite those who love mystery and magic.

I was very happy when A.J. King accepted to have a little chat with me and the first thing I asked was….

bw_yellow_gloves

–          Who exactly is A.J. King?

“I am A J King. I was once told that I disrespected my readers by not telling them anything about myself. So here are the headlines of my life. I have a degree in Counter Fraud and Criminal Justice, I’m a first Dan and former martial arts instructor, I studied photography and design and ran my own photography business before becoming a civil servant. I have worked on the photo-finish in a grey hound track (scary job because the punters would lynch you if you made an error – I’ve been at the top of a ‘tree-house’ with people shaking its legs). I have two virtually grown up children – (who would tell you I haven’t grown up yet) and being a mother has to have been the proudest and most important role in my life. Also when I was 8 I won a Blue Peter badge (anyone from the UK will know this is a big deal).”

–          Tell us about when you had your book published

“To mark a ‘special’ birthday last year (although I’m told they’re all special as it’s better than the alternative) I lost 4 stone and had the first part of my trilogy The Power Vested in Me (book 1 is called the Gatherers) published. I had hoped to get it published at the end of October on my actual birthday, but some technical hitches meant it was actually published mid December.”

–          Are your characters based on people you know?

“Yes, each character is usually a mixture of two or three people I have known. I was slightly concerned that some people would be offended that a character was based on them, but strangely no one has actually recognised themselves in these characters. Although other people have recognised them as a particular character (not sure what this says about self awareness) and people have identified with some characters who they are convinced are based on them and are not.

Also little experiences I have had and been told about by others have been woven into the fabric of the story. There is much more of this in book two.”

–          Highlight of having the book published…

“There have been two highlights. Firstly, when Toby the illustrator first showed me the cover and I saw all the children, that had previously only existed in my mind’s eye, actually in front of me on a page exactly as I had imagined them.  Secondly when I held the first hard copy of the book in my hands.”

–          Were there any surprises?

“The different things that people have taken from the book have surprised me. The response to the characters, has been amazing. I had expected the question that most people would ask me at the end of the book was ‘who is Starkey?’ (which is the mystery that runs throughout) but the question I am constantly asked is –when is book 2 coming?”

–          So when is Book 2 coming?

“I am frantically working on book 2 atm having said in another interview it will be ready by the end of the year. It has grown and grown and will be two volumes, part one and part two. Like the first book half of the story is in reality and half is in fantasy, although book 1’s fantasy bit was through time travel and Book 2’s fantasy is through dreams so totally make believe. The fantasy stories are much more indepth than I had planned, thus the need for two volumes. Karen, who I work with, has kindly donated the word ‘Ping!’ to me – without which it would be three volumes (you’ll have to read it to see what I mean).”

–          What’s next for you?

“In Book 2 it states one of the characters has written a book of poems. I intend to publish my poems as this book and this will coincide with the publishing of Book two Volume two.”

Author L. Joseph Smith on writing ‘Nazi Gold’, a modern day treasure hunt

INTERVIEW

I have always been fascinated by novels based on historical events and one of the topics that fascinate me the most are those based on Nazi myths. A few months ago, I was watching on TV an interesting documentary about Nazi lost gold and you can imagine my happiness when I later came across a book called ‘Nazi Gold’ by author L. Joseph Smith.

‘Nazi Gold’ is a captivating novel about an ex-Navy Seal called Jack whose ex-wife is hooked on drugs and is living with a drug smuggling biker. Jack doesn’t make enough to pay child support and live even working two jobs. It’s then when Jack’s 85-year-old dad shares a massive secret about hidden Nazi gold when he was a nineteen-year-old army private in World War Two.

I loved that book so when I got the chance to interview ‘Nazi Gold’ author L. Joseph Smith, I was beyond thrilled. You see, L. Joseph Smith is not just an author, he is an all-around artist with over 650 paintings for sale at fineartamerica.com and an experienced jazz and rock blues Trombonist.

Here is what we talked about…

–     What inspired you to write this book?

“I am a retired military man and I enjoy research

historical facts. I was researching the stolen gold of the Nazi’s. That lead me to this fact, that at the end of World War 2 the Nazi’s attempted to hide all of this stolen art and gold.”

–     How did you come up with the title?

“Well the title for this book is very simple and direct? ‘Nazi Gold’, I want my reads to understand what this book was from the beginning.”

–     What genre does this book to fit into?

“This a fiction novel with drama, action, adventure and even a little romance. What some readers don’t understand is that there is only a one small part that is written in WW2. This book takes place today in current times with current events.”

–     What influenced your interest in writing?

“I have always been a storyteller and an artist. I enjoy creating things, this a creation on joy. However, like most people life got in the way of my being able to write. I had a full military career, family, and business. I now can write full time.”

l-j-smith

–     What is the writing process like for you?

“I enjoy the research. All throughout my book, I place real factual information woven with fiction. Once I have collected enough information. I lay out my basic direction that I want the book to go toward. Then the magic starts, as I write the book takes on a life of its own. I just follow the twist and turns in every chapter. It is an ever changing story as I work thru the book.”

– What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

“I am an all-around artist. I paint and have a website of my art with over 650 paintings for sale at http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/l-j-smith.html. I have been a jazz and rock blues Trombonist over the past 45 years. So, even thou I have been a military Air Traffic Controller, my artist flag flies strong.”

–     What tips or words of encouragement do you have for other writers?

“Follow your dreams. You may not achieve those dreams on your time table. But, never give up. Pursue your passion when everyone says your crazy or are just dreaming. That’s ok because your dreams belong to you and you make of them what you will.”

 Joseph Smith’s Motto

“Nothing in this world can take the place of

persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than

unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a

proverb.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are

omnipotent.

Press On!”

SUCCESFUL MUSICIAN, VLOGGER, AUTHOR: AYDIN GUNER ON HIS NEW HIT BOOK ‘THE DEVIL AND I’

INTERVIEW

Aydin Guner has emerged onto the scene with one of the most exciting, exhilarating novels of 2016. ‘The Devil in I’ is a regular Amazon Top 100 seller and has already garnered interest from Hollywood. This edgy, sexy and unapologetically bold story challenges the status quo and tackles themes everyone can relate to. Unrequited Love, Good vs Evil, Morality, Sex and Paranoia all on a stunning New York backdrop.

Aydin is from the North of England and is a self-proclaimed whiskey lover. Aside from writing, he plays guitar for the band Revenant Dead and is an active vlogger and spokesman for narcissistic abuse. Aydin’s book ‘Behind The Mask: An Introduction Into Covert Narcissism’ is also available on Amazon Kindle.

Having watched Aydin’s YouTube videos on the subject of narcissism, I couldn’t wait to read his books. I was captivated by the engaging storyline with biblical references in The Devil and I’ so I was beyond happy when Aydin accepted to have a little chat with me.

When asked about his inspiration to write, Aydin simply said, “to push the envelope and see where it takes me. There’s nothing more therapeutic than being immersed in a story. I don’t think the creative world is taking enough risks. Life’s too short.”

AydinGuner

Here is what we talked about…

–       Aydin, how did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I never intended on being a writer initially. I have always been a musician and that was always my passion. But ever since I was a kid I’ve had a fascination with books like ‘Paradise Lost’ and Dante’s ‘Inferno’, and movies like ‘Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘The Omen’. I always imagined what it’d be like if The Devil really did walk on Earth and what that would look like. The general feeling, I had, was he’d be so evil no one would notice him. No one could outsmart or out charm him. He could make the deadliest of street gangs giggling like school boys in minutes. So I guess that’s the general thesis and that’s the story I wanted to tell.”

The Devil in I

– Are your characters based on people you know?

“A few people have asked me if Damon is based on me, and my best friend thought he was Jason from the Vegas scene. But in truth no one real is in this book. If there is anyone loosely based on anyone, it was Latasha – the manipulative office vixen. Her character is narcissistic but also very covert. I’ve encountered this before so it was fascinating to explore that character trait.”

–       What genre is your book?

“I’d say it’s a mix of things. It’s so fast paced, there’s drama, romance, crime, psychological thriller, even some adult scenes in there. There’s something for everyone in this book.”

Did you have a specific writing routine?

“I wish I did, but I didn’t. The ‘Devil in I’ took 4 years to write. A lot of it was therapeutic for me, I wrote when I was feeling down and depressed. Writing this story was a real escape for me. If there was a pattern, I’d say it was late at night. I’m more creative in the early hours of the morning. Between 2 and 5am.”

mask

What are your current projects?

“I’m currently writing the screenplay for ‘The Devil in ‘I, which is exciting. I’m also promoting my other book ‘Behind The Mask: An Introduction Into Covert Narcissism’, which is a psychology kindle book.”

What’s next for you?

“Things have been a bit of a whirlwind since the release of the book, but I’ m launching my website soon which will have all my content on there. The ‘Devil in I’ screenplay is being written so hopefully we can see that on the big screen at some point. I also hope to do some book fairs in the UK and meet book fans. I really appreciate the support from everyone.”

Successful author and entrepreneur Tasher on ‘Divorced and Scared No More’

INTERVIEW

Today we are excited to share with you our interview with Tasher, an American author and entrepreneur. Tasher along with co-author Tony Haynes published a 3 book series called ‘Divorced and Scared No More’. The main objective of this book series was to help in dealing with a divorce.

Tasher was divorced on her 26th wedding anniversary. Her marriage was broken all to pieces, however she was not going to let the divorce break her. Tasher quickly discovered that single life was very different from all those years ago. Like many, she initially was scared. Yet she was determined to become Divorce and Scared NO More!

After moving to Houston and despite her dyslexia, she decided to share with others things she learned while rebuilding her life. The launch of DASNM.com quickly received a worldwide following and Tasher became a frequent contributor to various online magazines.

–          But who exactly is Tasher?

“I was born in Flint, Michigan to Mary and Houston Asher. I have one older brother named C. Robert Asher. I am a country and city girl.  Our family lived on a farm that to this day still is a dirt road in Linden, Michigan until I was in middle school. At which time my family moved to the suburbs of Flint so my parents could be closer to the factories they worked in.  Mom worked for Chevrolet at the Metal Fab plant and Dad worked in Buick City on the North end.”

–          What have your challenges been having Dyslexia?

“I suffered from undiagnosed dyslexia until my high school teacher, Ms. Burdick recognized the symptoms and sent me for diagnoses. Ms. Burdick had a big impact forming my view of the reading disorder. She taught me how to use various strategies and techniques along with technical aids to help with the management of dyslexia. Within a short time, she taught me how it really was a gift that I just needed to learn to control.”

–          Did you really graduate college in 4 years while getting 3 degrees?

“After learning to control my gift my grades quickly improved and I graduated Ainsworth high school with a scholarship.  I attended Northwood University in Midland, Michigan did graduate in four years with three degrees.  They were Business management, Advertising and Automotive Marketing.  Upon graduation I was hired by General Motors Corporation in their Memphis Zone.  I really don’t look at dyslexia as a challenge it is rather my gift.  Once I learned to control it I excelled very quickly.”

Once I learned to control it
I excelled very quickly

–          How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I have dyslexia and writing is something everyone told me I couldn’t do especially my ex.  So after my divorced and with the encouragement of friends, family and my divorce attorney, I decided it was time to try.”

3_Book_Stacked

–          Tell us a little about your married life?

“I married my ex-husband on January 14, 1984 in Columbus, Mississippi. We had 3 children together.  He was a pilot in the USAF and relocated from Columbus Mississippi to San Antonio Texas. At which time I decided to quit my job as a district manager for General Motors Parts Division and became a stay at home mother. Our family lived in Memphis, Tennessee, Subic Bay, Philippines, and Boulder City, Nevada. My ex and I divorced on our twenty-sixth wedding anniversary January 14, 2010.”

–          What inspired you to write the Divorce and Scared No More series and start the website?

“I was not going to let the divorce break me. I decided to share with others the things I learned while rebuilding my life.  After moving to Houston, I launched the website and became a frequent contributor to various online magazines. I wanted to create something for people to take the ideas and either accept or reject them to fit in their personal situation. No two people will have identical situations, but in time, my hope is that with the shared experiences they can help guide others through this time in their life with the least amount of trepidation. Along with co-author Tony Haynes we published a 3 book series called ‘Divorced and Scared No More’. The main objective of this book series was to help in dealing life after divorce in the same manner the website has done. Hopefully to reduce the fear and anxiety in the lives of the recently divorced. Therapist and clinical author Justin Nutt, LSCSW, LAC, was consulted as a technical advisor for the series.”

The main objective of this book series
was to help in dealing life after divorce

–          How did you get so much information and stories? How do people react when they read about themselves?

“As I started sharing my experiences, others in-turn shared some of their stories. Many have allowed me to share those experiences, but out of respect for their privacy, and anyone that I have written about, some of the information in the stories have been changed. The intent of the website and books is to share while making sure everyone is comfortable, and without fear of reprisals.  Most of the people I have written about have approved of the text before it was published to make sure they are fine with what I have written.”

dasnm_series_collage20160430

–          My take on the series is the first book is about healing and the second is about as the title says practical advice.  Both have various topics in the books.  The third book is fun and about dating.  Why did you decide to write the whole book about just how to date?

“After my divorce and healing was accomplished, I decided to date.  Very quickly I discovered that single life was very different from all those years ago. There was not an internet back then, and cell phones didn’t exist. Like many, I initially was scared to date and online dating scared me to death.  I decided to treat dating like I would a business adventure.  I set up a plan of how to date yet continue to keep myself and my family safe.  The third book has all of the information on how to be a perspicacious dater.”

perspicacious
[pur-spi-key-shuh s]

–          What is a perspicacious dater?

“While dating after my divorce, I wanted to be discerning, have keen mental perception, vision and understanding in my dating. The word that sums all those attributes up is perspicacious [pur-spi-key-shuh s]. It is time to learn a new word and a new way to date.”

–          How did you come up with the title?

“The name of the series as a continuation of the website.  The name for the website is to help people understand there is no reason to be scared post-divorce.  Now is the time to make your life yours and do what you want.  Create a life where you are in control and if you need help look to your higher power to forge the new life you will enjoy.”

where you are in control

–          What genre is your books?

“The series is for self-help in dealing with life after divorce and dating.”

DASNM_logo200

–          The logo is very interesting; how did you come up it?

“The logo for the website and books is a broken set of pilot wings.  My ex-husband was a pilot and when they get their first set of wings in the USAF they break them in half and give one half to someone they love and the other half is thrown away. The point is those wings will never come together again.  Just like our marriage after the divorce.”

–          What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

“My daughter and two grandchildren live in the Houston area by me and my spare time is enjoying watching the wee ones’ activities.  My family is my world and I enjoy as much time with them as I can have.”

Writing is something
everyone told me
I couldn’t do
especially my ex

–          What influenced your interest in writing?

“I have always enjoyed telling stories but since I have dyslexia spelling and grammar are NOT my strong suit.    Writing is something everyone told me I couldn’t do especially my ex.  So after my divorce and with the encouragement of friends, family and my divorce attorney, I decided it was time to try.”

–          What tips or words of encouragement do you have for other writers?

“No matter what your challenge is while writing stick with your passion.  Do not listen to others that say you can’t…….if they say that to you think to yourself wanna bet!  You can do anything you want to do but be prepared that you may have to work a little harder or find tools that can help you.”

“Touch of Iron” author Timandra Whitecastle on the dark world of “The Living Blade”

INTERVIEW

The Living Blade” Book series has become my latest reading addiction. If you want to find out why I rave about it, please read my review for “Touch of Iron – The Living Blade Book 1” (click here). I got so obsessed with the world that Nora, Owen, Master Diaz, and prince Bashan live in that I wanted to know more about its creator, debut author Timandra Whitecastle.

Our little chat was such a fun and it couldn’t have been otherwise. The girl loves Star Wars and Loki!

So, literary world, I’m giving you Timandra Whitecastle!

 Author_pic

– Who exactly are you?

“Timandra Whitecastle, liliam inter spinas. (Hah!)”
– How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I remember this moment of decision well. I’ve always been writing stories for myself, dabbled in fanfiction, too (won’t say which fandom, though). But I had just become a mother for the first time, and to pass the time nursing, I read. A lot. I remember closing Joe Abercrombie’s final volume of the First Law trilogy (Last Argument of Kings), and besides being impressed, I remember thinking: wouldn’t it be cool if there were books like this with female heroes? I don’t mean heroines, by the way, I mean heroes, tragically flawed and broken, struggling as much with their inner conflict as with the external conflicts around them. So I searched and cast about, looking for that kind of book. But alas, I finally came to realize that perhaps I had to write the kind of book I wanted to read. So I did.”

– Was getting published hard?

“Yes and no. The traditional way through agents and publishing houses is plastered with rejection and the souls of talented writers crushed to pieces on the rocks below.  So I chose to self-publish (because I’m also a control freak.) Self-publishing seems easy at first, right? I mean, how hard can it be to write a novel, slap a cover on it, upload it to Amazon, and ta-daaa, you’re self-published, right? Well, yes. And no. The journey is the destination. Getting self-published just means you have to do all the quality control yourself: get an editor, get beta readers, a copy editor, a proof reader, get an artist for your cover, etc. The good thing is, a lot of people become involved on the way, and they ensure that when you do hit publish, you’ve got a damn good product to sell. So, yes, it’s hard, but a very enriching experience.”

If you have casting suggestions,
tweet them @timwhitecastle

– Are your characters based on people you know?

“There’s a great scene towards the end of Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf: the main character Harry sees himself disintegrate into many Harrys, each a whole, but also a facet of himself. Hesse then writes (I’m paraphrasing because I only know it in German) It’s a mistake and a cause of sadness to believe a person is a constant, whole entity. We exist in the form of many souls, many I’s. […] You can piece together the individual parts at any time and in any order, to thus demonstrate the endless plurality of life. So, in short, the answer to your question is, yes, the characters are all based on a person I happen to know very well, myself. Yes, even the villains.”

– What genre is your book?

“It’s grimdark epic fantasy.”

My characters are all based on a person
I happen to know very well,
myself,
even the villains

– Which of your books is your most favorite?

Well, I’d say it’s always the next one I’m writing … The great thing about writing a series is building on what came before, and spinning the tale further.”

– Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Alas, no. Although it’s my goal to one day become a full-time writer one day, I have a day job as a teacher, and I have two small kids. I’d like to say I have a goal of writing/ editing 500 words a day. But … I sometimes can’t write daily. I’m too busy living. And when I do buy out the time to write, I don’t put my “butt in chair and just write” until I hit a certain word count.

I mean, maybe it helps to have “a room of one’s own” to write in peace and quiet for a certain time period every day. Maybe it’s good to set the goal of x amount of words before allowing yourself to call it a day. But maybe it also drives you mad and you end up killing yourself like Virginia or Earnest. I wouldn’t know because I don’t work like that.

I work like this: I make an effort to carve some time out of each day to think about what I’m working on AND keep an open mind to all the life and characters happening around me that may inform my writing in deep and meaningful ways. In movies, this would be the pre-production stage. Or pre-viz. I’m basically setting myself up for the actual writing process so that when I do have the time to sit down and write my guts out, there’s enough raw material there to catch with a bucket.

Also I read. Daily. Like I breathe. It fuels me. It’s not only that it sharpens my mind, to quote Tyrion Lannister, but also because without input, you cannot have output.”

I finally came to realize that perhaps
I had to write the kind of book
I wanted to read

– What are your current projects?

“The second volume of The Living Blade series, as yet untitled. The first half is done and will be with the beta readers soon, and I’m half way through the second half. (Hmmm. Lots of halves in that sentence.)”

-What’s next for you?

I’m going to try and write a few short(er) stories in the same world to give away for free and thus build my email list …”

– Where do you draw inspiration from?

I’ll do the author thing and say: everywhere. Books I read, shows I see, movies I watch, people I observe, the landscape I live in. The truth is, though, some inspiration is describable, some just isn’t. The describable part is like this: I love reading, and I’m a fan of any kind of mythology. So there’s a well deep enough to never run dry. It helps, too, that I studied history and literature, so I have a detailed understanding of pre-industrial revolution societies that maybe most people do not have (and I know where to find the books that answer my questions when I don’t know something. Hooray for university libraries!)

For much of the actual story structure, well, I do own Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces, but I love his mythology books far more.

And besides, what really helps is just keeping your eyes open, listening to and lovingly observing human behaviour, and recognizing the ways your characters would actually behave. People are people everywhere.”

I read
Daily
Like I breathe
It fuels me

– If your book becomes a movie, which actors should play the leading roles?

That’s a really tough question. But only because I’m not very up-to-date with the stars out there. I’d love to see an Amazon original series of my books, though I have little ideas to casting choice. But if you have suggestions, tweet them @timwhitecastle. I’ll tell you if you’re way off. (That said, I do love Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki, though, and I based one of my er … villainous characters on that damn good acting.)”

– Your favourite authors?

I have a freight train load of influences from all over the place. The strongest are those writers that made such a deep impression on my mind that I wanted to write my own stories. There are many honorary mentions, really, but these following three had the strongest impact. I’ll do this chronologically.

The obvious first: Star Wars. Yeah. I belong to the generation of people who grew up on Episodes 4, 5, and 6  – to the point where I had seen the movies so often, I not only knew every single line, but also the little details in the background. However, I soon wasn’t satisfied with only replaying Luke’s adventures. I wanted to create my own. That moment of ownage was an important one, I believe, as it was the first time I consciously thought: I want to tell stories (and become a Jedi when I grow up. So, thanks, George Lucas.)

Next: Tolkien, obviously. I love the Lord of the Rings and could say many good things about it, but … The Silmarillion has become a touchstone in my life. I read it every year at least once, or parts of it every now and again just to check and see if I still am who I was when I was fifteen. (I’m not, of course, but my core has proven strangely resilient to all that life has thrown at me so far.) I’m a big mythology geek anyway, so reading The Silmarillion was an eye-opener – you could do this with fiction, too? Awesome.

Another big influencer was Chuck Palahniuk, but in a different way. I read Fight Club when I was seventeen and impressionable. And I’m so glad I did – I don’t know whether it would have had the same effect later on in life. The minimalistic writing, the force of the words that punch you in the face with truisms that again struck a chord deep within – it changed the way I read. Now, I do read a lot. It’s like a drug and I do withdrawal very badly. But what I’m secretly addicted to is that raw kick-in-the-head-style of enlightenment that gives me insight on myself. And Fight Club did that for me. However, some of Palahniuk’s stuff I consciously side-step because I know the effect his words will have on my mind for a long time (like Guts was disgusting. I will never be able to eat calamari again.)”

It’s not
who I am underneath,
but what I do that defines me

– What are you currently reading?

It’s a weird mix. Right now, I’ve just finished Mark Lawrence’s The Liar’s Key (grimdark fantasy), and have moved on to Jonathan French’s The Grey Bastards (also self-published grimdark fantasy), then I’m looking forward to Timandra Harkness’ Big Data. Does size matter? /shrug”

– What’s your favourite life motto?

“I will quote Batman on this: It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”

TouchofIronWebMedium

Is the Living Blade real or just a legend? With it… Prince Bashan could win back his kingdom. Master Telen Diaz can free himself of the burden from his past. Owen Smith sees a once-in-a-lifetime chance to gain untold knowledge. … but for Noraya Smith, the Living Blade will bring nothing but suffering and sorrow.

“Realistic, character-driven fantasy that manages to both sever limbs and warm the heart.” – Kirkus Reviews

‘Touch of Iron – The Living Blade #1’ by Timandra Whitecastle

REVIEW

TouchofIronWebMedium

Honestly, I fell in love with this book. It’s well written, packed with action and trust me, there is never a dull moment. Timandra Whitecastle’s writing style is exquisite, vocabulary-rich, cliché-free; vivid and realistic descriptions are the author’s strong point.

The storyline is captivating, one unpredicted twist after another, it keeps you wondering what’s next. In a book with so main characters out of the box, a bold female lead outstands. Nora is a strong fearless girl (in an Arya Stark way of awesomeness) while Owen is a boy who’s not that much into weapons as he is into books.

When I started reading ‘Touch of Iron’ I couldn’t predict the turn the storyline would take. I didn’t expect the characters to evolve and change so dramatically after finding themselves bogged down in an ominous and menacing situation. What started as a Young Adult fantasy story ended a dark, epic and edgy story, with unexpected twists and unpredictable premise, written masterfully, flawlessly.

Very impressive for a first-time author and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
