‘Remember Me (Sex Demon Series Book 1)’ by Nanea Knott

REVIEW

Willow is a sex demon. She is a succubus that’s fed off the hormones, sweat, breaths her partners secrete during sex. Briefly that means when she has ‘lunch’, she doesn’t have to count calories. As soon as I read this book’s description and first pages, I knew I wanted to read it. I found the idea of sex demons unique and original. Additionally, ‘Remember me’ has a captivating storyline that makes you want to turn the pages to know what’s next.
I loved Ms Knott’s writing style. Her language is eloquent and humorous, such a pleasure to read. Every scene is beautifully described, especially the sex scenes (yeah!), and obviously the author spent much time thinking every single detail of the world she created. The story is so engaging and full of twists that I couldn’t put it down. Lots of questions needed an answer. Who would want to kidnap a sex demon? Will Willow find someone to remember her? Everything was answered in the most delightful way.
Honestly, I can’t wait to read the next installment in the Sex Demon book series!

‘Murder By Association: A Stanford Carter Prequel’ by Gary Starta

REVIEW

This is a book that you just can’t put down once you start it. I read it in less than a day. The characters are well developed, complex and multi-faceted. The story is built in such a wonderful way that leaves you rooting for their success and fearing for their safety. Gary Starta did an amazing job creating twists and turns that left me guessing from beginning to end. The book gets off to a great start with a short prologue. A guy has just killed four women and two men lead by his distaste “for a crazy little thing called love”. It’s a guy who gets angry “every time a stranger passed him by without so much a nod or salutation”. The ending is at once unexpected and darkly emotional the way every great noir mystery is. “Lost in the character” as Gary Starta writes…

‘Life’s Defeat’ by Rebekah Raymond

REVIEW

‘No one ever tells you what it is like to die’. No one, except this book’s heroine whose name isn’t mentioned not even once throughout the book. How original is that! ‘Life’s Defeat’ is based on a very interesting and well thought out story. I liked the idea and characters are well developed. The action starts on the first page and doesn’t let up till the last. I loved Rebekah Raymond’s writing. Her descriptions are so vivid that I felt to the core her heroine’s agony and claustrophobic sensation caused by the unknown and the numerous trials she was forced to be through. The ending left some questions unanswered but I’ll happily read ‘Life’s Hope’ Book 2 in the series hoping that answers will be provided.

‘Bent, Not Broken’ by Suki Sather

REVIEW

‘Bent, Not Broken’ is a novel that smells of sweet cinnamon. If you’ve read it, you know what I mean.

Delaney can’t tell what’s real and what’s just living inside her head. There are gaps in her days and people unknown to her keep popping into her mind. She thinks she is permanently broken.

Malik, on the other hand, wonders how many times he has to suffer the same painful separation, again and again. The question is who he really is.

‘Bent, Not Broken’ is based on an interesting concept and characters are well developed. The action starts on the first page and doesn’t let up till the last. Descriptions are wonderful and vivid. All that make this book highly recommended and Suki Sather an author I’d definitely like to read more from.

Delaney also struggles with strange dreams and feeling lost and afraid, and though her Death Watcher is always right next to her, she has no clue he is there in the shadows protecting her, or the truths about her past that make it so important for her to be shielded in the stability and normalcy those who love her crusade to maintain around her.
The fight has only just begun in a war that has raged since the birth of humanity.
Can darkness conquer the light or will Delaney awaken and decide that ordinary is truly over rated?

‘Love in The Time Of Murder – The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives, Book 3’: Cozy but meaningful mystery novel

REVIEW

I have to admit it. I’m a fan of D.E. Haggerty’s work. Her books always help me to cheer up even if my mood is very bad. That happened when I read ‘Jack gets his man’, it happened again while reading ‘Love in The Time Of Murder – The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives, Book 3’. I had a bad cold, coughing and sneezing, but ‘Love in The Time Of Murder’ was like a cup of hot chocolate to me. Despite the fact it’s a part of a book series, it can read as a standalone. However if you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend that you read the first two books of the series.

This book has everything: mystery, humor, friendship, love. D.E. Haggerty’s writing style is delightful and I love her sense of humor: “if picking out losers was an Olympic sport, I’d have a closet full of gold medals”, “He shakes the Kindle. ‘Why are you obsessed with true-crime novels, Mrs Clark? I snort. ‘I also read shifter romance novels, but I’m pretty sure I’m not a werewolf’”.

But ‘Love in The Time Of Murder’ is not all love and roses. It also touches a very tough and serious problem, that of domestic violence. That’s what makes it a hidden literary gem.

Review: ‘Jack Gets His Man’ by D.E. Haggerty

REVIEW

I love amateur sleuth mysteries, especially the cozy ones. This is probably my most favourite literary genre of which ‘Jack Gets His Man’ by D.E. Haggerty is the finest example.

I hadn’t read anything from D.E. Haggerty before but since I first saw ‘Jack Gets His Man’ original comic-inspired cover, I said myself “This is a book I have to read”. And so I did. And I loved it!

What is not to love in this book? Jack, the best friend every woman would love to have? Izzy and Noel, that super cool couple? Those adorable ladies from the knitting club “who fancied themselves private investigators (…) seriously considering getting licensed”? Or Jack’s man? (No, I’m not going to reveal who that is).

To me ‘Jack Gets His Man’ is the perfect read for a Friday evening, when you want to get rid of the work’s stress and chill out.

I was amazed by D.E. Haggerty’s humorous, witty writing style and her ability to weave an interesting, fast paced storyline with hilarious Chapter titles like “My boobs are sore”.

The police car scene was one of my favourites moment in the book as was Chapter Fucking’s-right-32.

“Jack” and “His Man” got easily my five stars and convinced me to read the rest of D.E. Haggerty’s books.

Jack groaned and hid his face in his hands. This is what his life was reduced to? Getting set up on blind dates by eighty-year-old grandmas? He was pretty sure this was the definition of pathetic.

***

“I don’t know whether I love them or want to strangle them. When their attention is on someone else, I want to worship at their conniving little feet. But when they sink their claws into me, I want to scream like a little girl and go hide.”

***

“Underwear,” Betty repeated. “Why do you need cross-dressing underwear?”

Jack’s face pinked slightly. “Well, you know, to tuck certain assets away.”

The ladies giggled and glanced at his package, which was obviously not tucked away. Clearing his throat and resisting temptation to cover his family jewels with his hands, Jack continued. “And on this side, we have the big and beautiful section for women.”

***

Jack, Izzy, and the ladies met up at Izzy’s house the following night. The women were tittering in excitement. They had obviously coordinated their going-on-recon outfits. Their matching ensembles consisted of black, stretchy pants, black blouses, and black orthopedic shoes. They even had matching black scarves to hide their silver locks. Jack wondered if he should be escorting them to a casual funeral instead of going on this so-called recon mission.

***

“Hands in the air. Drop to your knees” was shouted at them. Blinded by a flashlight, it was impossible to identify the speaker.

Martha huffed. “There is no way I’m going to my knees, young man,” she yelled at the light.

“Me either. I’ll never be able to get up again,” Ally agreed and put her hands on her hips in protest.

Jack shook his head but quickly dropped to his knees. Only he would get caught while snooping with two grandmas who refused to listen to the police. He hung his head and pretended he was somewhere else, anywhere else.

‘Debited, Credited and Accounted: Bridging Human Behavior and Accounting’ by Maria Victoria Q. Caparas

REVIEW

Some of you might know that recently I changed career path. While I was trying to decide what my next step should be, I considered the odds of landing a job as an accountant. You see, both of my parents are accountants.

It was then when I came across to ‘Debited, Credited and Accounted: Bridging Human Behavior and Accounting’ by Maria Victoria Q. Caparas.

This is not a cold text book! Not at all!

US_createspace_edition

Author Maria Victoria Q. Caparas shares some personal stories creating a connection with her readers. I felt like she was talking to me personally. I guess this has to do with her approach to teaching.

“The beauty of a field project is that the students are open to all sorts of responses—positive, negative or indifferent,” she notes.

The author starts with why accountants are important in business.

“Undeniably, there is no business that can survive without an accountant to provide the necessary information for management decisions,” she writes.

And then she continues with two basic rules of accounting:

“Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity” and “Debit always equals credit”.

Then Ms Caparas helps us understand what ‘Bank reconciliation” is, how important to prepare a trial balance at any time during the year is and explains that “in accounting, a liability is a debt”.

All examples used are clever and original. Would you ever expect that ‘Lord of the Ring’ would help you understand accountings? Would you ever match the ever favorite ‘that’s gross’ expression up with wages or salaries? Or the purgatory with exams?

Overall ‘Debited, Credited and Accounted: Bridging Human Behavior and Accounting’ is a useful asset to those with an interest in accounting.

As for me, I don’t think I could ever make a successful accountant. Unfortunately, everything that has to do with numbers is just Greek to me…

Book description

Available in Amazon (amazon.com, createspace.com and kindle store)

There is no business that can survive without an accountant to provide the necessary information for management decisions. But as a useful tool, accounting has its obvious limitations that are keenly perceived more by the non-accountants. To wit, the business cannot thrive with it only as a trade tool. It cannot measure and record everything that sustains a business. And although the debits might equal the credits, the employees may be highly dissatisfied. Debited, Credited and Accounted exalts accounting’s strengths while pointing out its weaknesses. Using real-life examples, the author proposes a bridge between accounting and human behavior, thus enriching both the hard and soft sides of business. For business students, the book promises to make accounting concepts less frighteningly technical and more down-to-earth. For accounting professionals, Debited, Credited and Accounted offers a light way to extend their specialized knowledge to an equally challenging business facet of managing human behavior.

‘The Land Of Dark Secrets – A True Story’ by K.M. Lessing

REVIEW

A few days ago I read and reviewed non-fiction book God Has Failed Me, A True Story, Part 1 by K.M. Lessing. In Part 1 of her true story, K.M. Lessing openly reveals her journey through religions and the book ends with her by distance romantic relationship with a holy cleric of Islam who resides in California, USA.

As in ‘God Has Failed Me’ it’s not revealed what happens next, I was anxious to read ‘The Land Of Dark Secrets’, Part 2 of K.M. Lessing’s true life book series.

book_2_front_cover

This book starts with a quite shocking way. “Death to America”. That’s the title of the very first chapter! That gives you an idea of what’s next!

Of course it isn’t the author herself who wishes “Death to America”. On the contrary, she points out throughout the book what the mantra of Iran is and how Islam strategically advances in the United States.

‘The Land Of Dark Secrets’ the author describes in every detail her love affair with a married religious leader from Iran. She explains how she was deceived and emotionally manipulated by a sweet-tempered man. “I already miss you my beautiful love”, “You have the most beautiful eyes” were a few of the verbal weapons that man used to achieve his goal which was sex through a temporary marriage. Yes, you read it right.

All voicemails throughout this book are real and are transcribed verbatim. Voicemails have not been edited. That made me feel I was listening to a friend who was sharing with me her secrets over a cup of coffee. I felt the author had confided in me a piece of her heart and soul.

“I wanted to get things out of my system so I could move on from him. The most important task in life is to search for the truth. The truth is hidden. But the truth is always available to those who want it” writes K.M. Lessing.

Now I’m looking forward to reading Book 3 of the trilogy to find out if K.M. really managed to block out the horror of what Mahdi had done to her.

For a limited time, the ebook is available for only 99 cents K.M. Lessing’s website: http://kmlessing.com/the-land-of-dark-secrets-a-true-story/

“God Has Failed Me – A True Storm, Part I” by K.M.Lessing

REVIEW

First of all, I have to admit that I am a religious person. I believe in what most of us in Western World call God or other cultures and religions call Higher Power, Supreme Being etc. I’m always open to discussions on the topic and I’m interested in studying different views on the subject.

That’s why K.M.Lessing’s God Has Failed Me – A True Storm, Part I sounded so interesting to me and I was eager to read it. And I wasn’t disappointed.

This is the true story of a young woman who faced several disappointments by people who claimed to be religious and pious. In this book it’s clear that calling yourself a Cristian, a Buddhist, or a Muslim isn’t enough. What you do to honor your faith is what that matters.

K.M.Lessing’s troubled life started since childhood. Although her parents weren’t abusive, they were unable to express any kind of affection to their daughter. You know, having a baby and being labeled as a parent is not enough. You need to work on being a good parent. Otherwise you’ll bring up children desperate for love and affection, ready to make all the wrong choices in life in order to fill the gap. Wrong choices that might include alcohol, abusive husbands, even men in their late 20’s that claim to be virgins when they’re… OK, no spoilers!

“My ex-husband had essentially told me everything was all my fault,” writes K.M.Lessing. That happened before she met the man who told her “I’m sure you will like me so much! I’m a good man! I’m a virgin!”

I’m sure this book will have a huge success and it will cause a debate. It will make you double check everything you’re told so you won’t take anything for granted. You see, some people aren’t who they claim to be.

To me this book isn’t only about God. It’s also about people who hide behind their religion, people who misinterpret religious scripts to their own benefit.

Most important this book is about how difficult is for a woman to live either in the modern Western world and or the not so modern Arabic one. As K.M.Lessing writes “because the world is operating in the unspoken Men’s Language, one thing I can guarantee you is: there is almost no justice in this world for women!”

Can’t wait to read The Land of Dark Secrets, A True Story, Part 2

God Has Failed Me, A True Story, Part 1

In Part 1 of her true story, K.M. Lessing openly reveals her imperfect life and candidly narrates her journey through the following: gothic club enchantment, her wish for love, marital misery, alcohol entanglement, spending the holidays alone, bad church experiences, loss of faith, disappointing people, the question of abortion, trying to find a boyfriend who isn’t into porn, nihilism, and exposing a crafty internet predator who turns out to be a married religious leader from Iran.

Throughout her book, K.M. Lessing provides her perspective and critique on the myth of romantic relationships, toxic American “culture,” Hollywood, American pseudo-Christianity, the myth of counselors and why it’s better to become independent, questionable religious leaders, men’s accountability for their errant sexual behavior, and her first-hand experience with Islam.

“Discovering the It Factor within You” by Leesa Rowland

REVIEW

A couple of years ago I lost my job. That didn’t hurt me emotionally because it was a job I really hated. But bills kept piling up and I had to bring food on the table. It was then when I had an epiphany and I realized what my next move should be. I decided to run a business of my own. A very risky decision. I had to bring out the best of me personally and professionally to succeed. And this is not a simple action, it’s a constant effort.

I’ve read plenty of self-help books since then but it was “Discovering the It Factor within You” that spoke to me. I realized that the moment I read this line:

“Don’t wait for a miracle to happen in your life. Have an epiphany now and realize that your life is the true miracle.”

That’s what I had a few years ago: an epiphany!

This book helped me to realize I already possess the It Factor. I have what I need to build a successful professional career and have a happy personal life. The key point was to understand that “much negativity is generated by a lack of belief in yourself. You need to realize that if you don’t see any charisma within you, it doesn’t mean you were born without it.”

I finished this book in a day. It was impossible to put down, a book I highly recommend.

“Discovering the It Factor within You” will help you believe in yourself and find your talent. It will teach you how to create space in the mind for a new original thought. It will train you how to not let negative situations and negative people take over and ruin your life.

Luck is truly where preparation
and opportunity meet.

‘Charisma in performance’ and ‘The aura and charisma’ were two of the chapters I loved. It was very interesting to find out what the similarities between performance and charisma are and how to see auras by observing another person or looking at yourself in the mirror. Amazing!

But most of all I cherished Leesa Rowland’s perspective on life. Despite the difficulties and the tragedies she faced in her life (including a shocking revelation about her mother’s death and an incident involving a Hollywood actor), she remained a wonderful, loving and sensitive human being. And with the help of Robin Cofer’s wise quotes, Ms Rowland inspires you to be a better person through love and kindness.
