Isabella “Izzy” Church on her book ‘Angry Movie Guy’ and her amazing career in film and television industry

INTERVIEW

I love books. And I love movies. So how couldn’t I love a book about an awkward film reviewer who falls in love with a fiery filmmaker while a lewd producer unrelentingly plots against the budding romance?

This is what Angry Movie Guy by Isabella “Izzy” Church is about.

Born in Sacramento, California, Izzy Church is focused on writing for film and television, as well as songwriting. Izzy began her career as an actress/model in New York City. While in New York she attended Marymount Manhattan College graduating Summa Cum Laude, specializing in writing for film and television. To further her writing career she interned and later worked for DreamWorks in the books to film department. Additionally, Izzy pursued acting with several of the top-acting instructors in the country. Currently, Izzy is living and working as an actress, improviser, and artist in New York City. She is also the head of a boutique Media Development Company called, Third Culture Creative where she develops film, television and animation content.

Recently I had the pleasure to have a little chat with Izzy and the chance to find out what an interesting person she is…

Izzy_Church_Bio_Pic

  • How did you decided to pursue a writing career?

“I began storytelling, at an early age and performing on stage as an actress, musician, and dancer. Although it may sound strange, performing in front of a live audience really helped me to develop my skills as a writer. Later, when I decided to make the big move to NY to pursue acting/modeling… it really opened up my world and my eyes as a writer. However, it wasn’t until college that I decided to pursue writing professionally. I graduated from MaryMount Manhattan with a degree in Communication Arts, specializing in writing for film and television. This gave me a solid base as a writer and I was able to transfer those skills to numerous performance pieces and see my writing come to life on stage, on screen, and now as a novelist.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“I was actually approached by a boutique-publishing house and asked to write: Angry Movie Guy. We later decided to go our separate ways and I published with Square Monkey Publishing. Nevertheless, they’re early interest in my writing career gave me the encouragement to complete my debut novel: Angry Movie Guy.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“These characters are entirely fictional, but they feel like real people because they have clear wants and needs. Their stories are personal and yet relatable, which creates a comfortable familiarity with types the audience somewhat already knows.”

  • What genre is your book?

Angry Movie Guy, is a film industry romantic comedy novel.”

“Writing is a dirty business, and that’s exactly
why I love it. I’ve been getting my hands
grubby with it ever since I was old enough to
pick up a pencil and spell my name”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“This is my debut novel, so I guess at this time, it’s my favorite.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I try to write everyday for an hour, but sometimes that hour turns into an all day affair.

That’s a good day… when I can pound a couple chapters out or at least the beginnings of a new screenplay.”

  • What are your current projects?

“Currently, I’m working on a satirical animation T.V. series titled, Suffer Club. I am also, working on a new romantic comedy novel.”

  • What’s next for you?

“There are a lot of irons in the fire, so the best way to keep up to date with what I have going on next is to follow me on my social feeds and my websites: angrymovieguy.com & izzychurch.com.

ANGRY MOVIE GUY

“A fast-paced, sometimes slapstick, film
industry novel with a vibrant cast of
characters.”
Kirkus Review

Angry Movie Guy is rich with suspense,
romance and just a touch of the
supernatural. Izzy’s style is engaging and her
imagination is boundless. Angry Movie Guy
does not disappoint!
D.Ibrhahim

Angry Movie Guy is a romantic comedy novel. Its star, Charlie Zimmerman, a explosive
movie reviewer. Zimmerman’s early career is stagnate, and the only way he keeps it
afloat is to adopt a new persona. He becomes a sensationalist, shock-jock style writer,
known for acerbic wit and biting reviews on any and all films. This sees his meteoric rise
but in the end it could cost him his love interest in Alexa.
The book also features Harry, the antagonist set on keeping the two lovers apart no matter
what the cost. Harry’s is the producer of Charles’s show and his goal – maintain the
show by any means necessary up to and including bad publicity.
“I wanted to create a film industry novel” said Izzy Church, “This way people can finish
my book thinking how great a movie it would make.”
Church’s book will be on store shelves and available via download on February 14th,
2016.

This story was a reminder Philip K. Dick and
Borges with twists of consciousness and odd
realities. There was a quirky charm to the
characters and events flew by in a fictional
strobe lit haze. Angry Movie is a must read!

Nanea Knott, author of The Sex Demons Series, on being an indie author

INTERVIEW

I knew I wanted to meet author Nanea Knott the moment I finished reading her book ‘Remember Me’. As you can read in my review (here), Remember Me is a book that has a captivating storyline that makes you want to turn the pages to know what’s next.

As a Nanea Knott’s fan, I was pleased to discover she’s not only a great author but a nice and witty person as well …

– Who exactly is Nanea Knott?

“A person who is finally doing one of the things she has always wanted to do. I believe I’ve found the thing I was meant to do with my life. It’s what gets me out of bed every morning and stops me from sleeping at night because I have so many ideas and a to-do list a mile long. I love it, it’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.

I know that I love it because I haven’t made much money at it so far, but I keep working at it. It’s that thing about getting paid for doing something you love so much that you would do it for free. Writing is it. I would do it for free, but my goal is to one day soon be a self-supporting author.

No matter what I’m going to keep writing. I’ve written nine books to date, in different genres, and there are many more clamoring for attention in my head. Nanea is a person who is beginning to live the dream.”

51b002D0t9L._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“It’s funny that when I was a teenager, I dreamt of being a writer, and then when I graduated from college, I did something completely different. Now I’m back to writing. I’ve closed the circle on an important aspect of my life, and I couldn’t be happier.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“I’m an Indie writer; I publish everything on my own. It’s a lot of work, but worth it. I used to work for a national bookstore, and I learned a lot about how big publishing houses work. When I was ready to write my first book I decided to go Indie all the way. It hasn’t been easy, and the work is ongoing, but I’m getting there and for the most part, enjoying the process, I have no regrets.”

Celeste-Cover-sm-web

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Not really, my characters are more like a blending of characteristics I’ve observed over time from people watching, reading books and watching TV. There is one benefit to being a writer. When someone annoys me, and I need to kill off a character, I think about whatever the situation was and use that person as a model and decide how to kill them.

It’s normally painful but quick. If I’m really mad, I torture them first. It’s a game, a way to continue to challenge myself and my writing skills. Thinking up inventive ways to dispatch characters. But before I come off sounding like a psycho, I do the same thing with good things as well. In my books, good always wins. I’m primarily an optimist that believes good triumphs over evil. I do my best to make sure the good guy always wins.”

HWH-Cover-81515

  • What genre are your books?

“I write in a couple of different genres, but the series I’ve been focusing on lately is the Sex Demon Series. It’s Paranormal Erotic Romance. It’s more romance than erotic, but the sex scenes are explicit.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“That’s a tough one because I like different books for different reasons. Just in the Sex Demon series, Celeste in the prequel is passionate and driven to the point where she’s not sure she’s doing the right thing, but intends on doing it anyway. It’s hard not to admire someone with that much conviction.

I liked being able to delve more into the secret world of sex demons living among humans and discovering all the details of how it works in Remember Me. Book two, Unforgettable, introduces more characters, more information on the world of sex demons.

For me, my favorite is usually the book I’m currently writing. In this case, it would be book number three, Remind Me.”

MS725-sm-web

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I still work full time, but I try to write on my lunch breaks almost every day. I also try to write when I get home, and it’s rare when I don’t write on the weekends. I try to either write or work on the website every day in some form. Some days I make a lot of progress, some days I don’t, but everything I do keeps the momentum going and that’s what’s important to me.

  • What are your current projects?

“I’m working on book three in the Sex Demon Series. I’m also working on another BBW ménage bear shifter novel. I tend to switch projects, so I don’t get bored, and it ensures that each project keeps moving. It’s only when I near the end of a project that I put everything else on hold to finish something. I’m just about ready to put down my pen on Remind Me, so that’s my main focus right now.

I’m also experimenting with audio. I’m debating whether or not to narrate my books myself. To that end, I bought some equipment and recorded the blurbs for some of my books and put them on the website. I’ve often wondered what the voice of the author sounds like. It changes how I perceive a book when I hear the voice of the person who wrote it. Now visitors to my website can hear my voice.”

UFG-lg-web

  • What’s next for you?

“Writing, more writing, and learning. There are a lot of successful authors out there, and some of them are generous enough to share what they know. I’m trying to avoid making the same mistakes they did. There is no way to succeed without failure, but if I can avoid making the common mistakes, I’m already ahead. In doing so, I help myself, and my potential readers. My goal is to keep my readers happy and more importantly keep them coming back. My next big thing is building my street team, a dedicated group of fans to beta read, post reviews and spread the word on my books. Every author needs them and indie authors can’t survive without them.”

‘Frustrated Witness’ by Willis Morgan: an eyewitness account of the Adam Walsh case

INTERVIEW

On July 27, 1981 a seven-year-old boy called Adam John Walsh was abducted from a Sears department store at the Hollywood Mall in Hollywood, Florida, and later found murdered and decapitated. His death earned national publicity. His story was made into the 1983 television film Adam, seen by 38 million people in its original airing. His father, John Walsh, became an advocate for victims of violent crimes and the host of the television program America’s Most Wanted.

Convicted serial killer Ottis Toole confessed to Adam’s murder but was never convicted for this specific crime due to loss of evidence and a recanted confession. The police investigation of his abduction was alleged to be unsatisfactory, and they lost the bloodstained carpet from Toole’s Cadillac, the machete used to decapitate Adam, and eventually, the car itself. DNA testing was in a rudimentary state in the early 1980s and it was not possible then to determine the source of the blood found in the Cadillac.

Willis Morgan was an eye witness at the mall the day Adam was taken, but rather than feel relief when the Hollywood Police Department finally convicted suspect Ottis Toole in 2008, he felt sick and frustrated. Frustrated that a young child was snatched from right in front of him. Frustrated that evidence, leads and witness testimony were lost. Frustrated that eyewitness testimony of Jeffrey Dahmer being at the Hollywood Mall the same day was disregarded. Frustrated because there was a compelling wall of evidence that it was Jeffrey Dahmer, the Milwaukee Cannibal, who killed Adam, and not Toole. And most of all frustrated because no justice has yet been served for Adam Walsh. In his book Frustrated Witness, Morgan details his unnerving encounter with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the mall, the other eyewitness accounts of that fateful day and major flaws in the police investigation.

“This is the account of Adam Walsh’s abduction and my attempts stretching across decades to find justice for him,” Morgan writes. “As much as this book is a case for Jeffrey Dahmer being Adam’s murderer, it is equally a study of how the Hollywood Police Department (HPD) conducted the homicide investigation.” Morgan has left no stone unturned in his quest for the truth and Frustrated Witness includes an incredible array of evidence he gathered, piece by painstaking piece, to prove Dahmer committed the murder of Adam Walsh. This includes crime scenes he uncovered, police investigative reports he researched, an analysis of suspect composites and even the sordid details of Dahmer’s murky past before he came to be known as America’s most notorious serial killer who dismembered, ate or kept parts of his victims. Frustrated Witness not only implicates Dahmer but presents the facts to the court of public opinion, in the hope that it ultimately brings about justice for Adam Walsh.

Since I discovered this book on Amazon, I was eager for an interview with its author. Willis Morgan and I had recently a little chat and here is what he said to me…

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“A detective talked the Hollywood Police Department into pinned Adam’s murder on the wrong person. I want everyone to know it was not Ottis Toole that abducted and murdered Adam Walsh.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“For me the biggest hurdle to overcome has been marketing and getting the media to cover this story.

During the December 16, 2008, closing conference, Police Chief Chadwick E. Wagner fed the Walsh family and the media more baloney than would fit in any sandwich. Mainstream media outlets accepted the transparently contrived story as the truth without investigating and without even the slightest bit of skepticism. As a consequence, the media ate the sandwich.

The following are just some of the headline stories that ran the day after the closing:

  • Case Closed: Police ID Adam Walsh Killer (ABC News)
  • Cops Solve ’81 Slaying of AMW Host John Walsh’s Son (NBC News)
  • Cops: 1981 Adam Walsh Murder Solved (CBS News)
  • The Murder of Adam Walsh: A 27-Year Mystery Solved (FOX News)
  • Police ID Killer of ‘Most Wanted’ Host’s Son (USA TODAY)
  • Adam Walsh Murder Case Closed (America’s Most Wanted)

Afterward, I tried to tell the media the true story, but in the gold rush frenzy of media competition, they seemed to be more interested in getting the official story out. Since most got it wrong, my frustration as a witness was exacerbated. Getting the HPD, the State Attorney’s Office, and the courts to listen has proven harder than I ever imagined. This, then, is my odyssey as a frustrated witness. And this is Adam’s story as much as it is mine.”

BOOK DESCRIPTION

The Real Untold Story of the Adam Walsh Case

by Willis Morgan

When six-year-old Adam Walsh was abducted from the Hollywood Mall on July 27, 1981, and his severed head found at the Florida Turnpike, no one could have guessed that it would take police almost thirty years to find the culprit or that even then they had still got it all so wrong.

Willis Morgan isn’t just the author of Frustrated Witness he is also one of the many witnesses that were at the Hollywood Mall on the day Adam Walsh was abducted. Rather than feel relief when the Hollywood Police Department finally convicted suspect Ottis Toole in 2008, he felt sick and frustrated. There was a compelling wall of evidence that it was Jeffrey Dahmer, the Milwaukee Cannibal, who killed Adam, and not Toole. “Frustrated Witness” not only implicates Dahmer but presents the facts to the court of public opinion, in the hope that it ultimately brings about justice for Adam Walsh.

In 1972 Willis moved to Miami and started working for the Miami Herald. In 1977 he became a supervisor in charge of the training program for the pressroom.

In 1981 Willis became involved in the Adam Walsh case after he had an encounter with one of America’s most notorious serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer, in Radio Shack located in the Hollywood Mall, Hollywood Florida. The day was July 27, 1981. This was the same day that Adam Walsh was abducted.

After the Hollywood Police Department closed the case on December 16, 2008 pinning Adam’s murder on a sycophantic serial confessor, Ottis Toole, Willis started tracking down other witnesses to find out where the police went wrong. It was also about that time Willis started writing his book Frustrated Witness! Willis wants the world to know it was not Ottis Toole that murdered Adam.

Mikki Smith talks about her debut book, Dark Secrets

INTERVIEW

Dark Secrets. I love dark secrets. And for that I was intrigued to find out a book with this title, Dark Secrets.

The book description was even more compelling to me.

Misty’s family, hid a dark secret from her. Until the coven came to claim what they believe belongs to them. Their chosen ones, to lead the coven to become the most powerful. It is written the twins who they separated at birth are to reign together as one to keep the bloodline pure. When Misty refuses to stand with them, hell will break loose.

As you can understand I couldn’t wait to have a little chat with author Mikki Smith and get to know more about her debut book.

  • Mikki, how did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“20+ years ago for some strange reason the words Dark Secrets kept coming to me, I have no idea why, so I typed it out. Then I started seeing things play out in my head so I typed what I saw and soon I’d seen a story coming to life. I wrote down what I felt my characters looked like in my head and in a few months I had over a thousand pages. There was Dark Secrets. Through the many pages and write out I found I love writing, I love the fact that I can be who or whatever I want and do whatever I desire without guilt or condemnation.”

12376129_947760418634170_5604535215682742338_n (1)

  • Was getting published hard?

“Getting published was a challenge at first since I wasn’t computer savvy. First I went to the library and looked at a book on publishers what they want and who is looking for first time authors, but no luck so I started googling publishers for horror/ paranormal and Full Moon press popped up. So I sent her a query letter, she got right back with me and asked for my manuscript and said she thinks this might be what she’s looking for, she asked me to give her a couple weeks to read it so while I was waiting I sent out probably 30 query letters and it was just under a couple of weeks when Ronda got back with me. I signed not wanting to put it off, after I did I had three other offers. It was rough at first but well worth it.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Misty my main character, I used a friend from school’s description, Jamie Gregory, she was plain but very pretty one that never had to wear make-up, that’s how I’d seen my character so she fit perfect. Laura, Misty’s best-friend I used another girl’s description to a tee, even the snobby part she fit the profile perfect, two opposites being best friends. Detective Billy Norris, I made him to look the way the guys did in the seventies, he actually is described as one of my boyfriends back then with a ponytail, we won’t mention the others names, but if they should see this they will know who they are.”

  • What genre is your book?

Dark Secrets is fiction/thriller/suspense/occult I say all of those because there is such a mixture in the book.”

10428709_950067935070085_8462638525717827081_n

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I write when I feel like it, there are days when I can write and write but then there are times when I won’t even attempt it. I don’t have a certain time to write I just do it, but when I do I have to have the television on or I can’t think, I know weird right?”

  • What are your current projects?

“I am making Dark Secrets a series, kinda like what V.C.Andrews did, where all the books branch off one way or another! Now I am co-writing the second book (Brewing Storm) with my sister-in-law Susan Lamey, plus I’m working on a book it will be a standalone book titled (For the Love of Johnny) based on a true story but will be fiction. It’s about child abuse-suicide- and a rare genetic crippling disease, plus I’m going to do a book about our heroes in their own words, but I haven’t started that yet. When that is finished and published half of the proceeds will either go to wounded warriors or towards building an apartment building for our homeless vets so they can have a place to call home. So for right now this is what I’m doing until something else comes to mind.”

-What’s next for you?

“Just going to take it day by day and finish what I’ve started until something else comes to mind but for now my plate is pretty full.”

Leah Rae Lambert, author of ‘The Unveiling’ and ‘Shred of Evidence’, on writing novels based on true stories

INTERVIEW

Leah Rae Lambert began her writing career after early retirement from public service in Toronto, Ontario, where she makes her home. Her first book, The Unveiling, drew from her mother’s experiences escaping the hardships of life in Eastern Europe and struggling as an immigrant to fit into a new society. In Shred of Evidence, her second novel, Leah Rae Lambert drew inspiration from real experience, painstaking research, and documented testimony to tell the story of a woman’s determination to uncover the truth about her husband’s shocking death in the face of secret government programs and cover-ups.

Book_Signing

  • What was the hardest part of writing your book?

“Keeping the focus on Rachel’s search for answers about her husband’s death without getting too immersed in the historical details of the MKUltra Program and its mind-control activities.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Many of the characters in my books are inspired by real people, but some are totally fictional. My inspiration for my first book, The Unveiling, came from stories of my mother’s life. My second book, Shred of Evidence, is based on true stories, documented research and victim testimony. The book follows one woman’s quest to discover the reason for her husband’s suicide and leads to the CIA’s secret program of mind control experiments on unsuspecting citizens. These experiments took place during the Cold War. I have dedicated the book to the many individuals and families who suffered because of the experiments and to the researchers and journalists who worked so hard to get to the truth. My first book was historical fiction and the latest book is more contemporary fiction and political intrigue. I enjoy doing the background research for the books and was quite shocked at what I learned about the MKUltra Program.

I hope people will find the book a good read. In addition, I hope it will lead to greater understanding and discussion about the dangers of research on people without their consent and full understanding of the risks. Ultimately I hope this understanding will help reduce the likelihood of such programs in the future.”

  • While you were writing, did you ever feel connected to one of the characters?

“Yes, because Rachel was inspired by some of my own experiences. However, the story was not a memoir so I was free to take her on a different journey than I went on personally. That is the joy of writing fiction.”

  • Do you see writing as a career?

“Writing is my second career. I began writing after early retirement from a career in public service. I’m glad I’ve been lucky enough to have a successful career as a director of research and planning, and can now devote myself to writing without expecting to make a living from it. I admire and respect writers who devote themselves to writing at an earlier stage in their lives. From what I have learned, it is very difficult for writing to bring financial success.”

  • What inspired you to write your first book?

“For my first book, The Unveiling, I got my inspiration from my mother and grandmother and the stories they told me as I was growing up. These were stories about their struggles to survive in Eastern Europe and their harrowing escape to the United States. There they faced new struggles as immigrants trying to fit into a new society. The focus of the book is on the burden of family secrets and how the truth can be liberating. I always knew I would write this story and did extensive interviews with family members before writing the book.”

386918_6356f9293df449d596e30209d5ff4268

  • What are your favorite books to give and get as gifts?

“I love to give my own books as gifts to people who I think will enjoy them. I also like to give books about subjects I know are important to the recipients. For instance, for people who love theater, I try to find new books about the theater and the people who have made contributions to it. If someone is a sports fan, I enjoy finding a book about sports for that person.

Books I enjoy receiving as gifts are usually books about real people who accomplished something significant or who have overcome challenges. These might be historical fiction, memoirs or biographies. I also enjoy receiving books about the theater.”

  • A message to your readers?

“Yes, I hope you enjoy Shred of Evidence. If you do, please tell your friends about it or even post a review on amazon. I’d love to have your feedback, so drop me a line via email. And if you enjoy this book, you might want to read my first novel, The Unveiling.”

FUN FACTS ABOUT LEAH RAE LAMBERT

“My first job was as a sixth grade teacher in an inner city school in Pittsburgh, PA. During my first week, a parent came to the door and when I went to speak with him, he asked me if I would please find the teacher for him to talk with. I stayed in that setting for two years and found it the most difficult and also most rewarding job I ever had, even though my career later involved research and planning in the criminal justice system. I taught for another 2 years in the suburbs of Washington, D.C . and experienced a different set of challenges.”

“Moving to Toronto, Ontario was an exciting experience and I have enjoyed making Toronto my home. I enjoy the diversity of the city and the lively cultural scene. For years my family had a cottage on a lake north of Toronto where it was fun to swim, boat, and hike. The drives back and forth became stressful, but I loved being near the water. I now live in a condo on Toronto’s waterfront and enjoy the peacefulness of my view onto Lake Ontario.”

“My daughter decided on a career in the theater and won a Tony award for the best original score for a Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, that she co-wrote with a writing partner. Sitting beside her in the Radio City Musical Hall the night she won the award was thrilling for both of us. Both she and my son have always been fun to be around.”

“I love the theater. Trips to New York are great, particularly when I can see the original cast in a new show. I love to attend plays in Toronto and also in Stratford and Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. Now that I spend my winter s in Florida, I try to attend as many shows as possible in various local venues.”

“I do not like winter weather or snow although once I moved to Toronto, I tried to enjoy it. I even took up cross-country skiing and found it exhilarating. But now that I am able to spend winters in Florida, I am happy to be away from the snow and enjoy the sunshine and beach. Although I am not a great swimmer, I love being near the water. I also enjoy getting to the cottage country of Ontario in summers and to walk through the wooded areas.”

“Since I was quite young I have been a baseball fan. My first team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. When Toronto got its team, I also became a great fan of the Blue Jays.”

“I’ve been dividing my time between Toronto and Marco Island, Florida, and my next venture will use that experience for background.”

Shred of Evidence

Shred of Evidence reveals the shocking details of the CIA’s MKUltra program of mind control experiments that endangered and destroyed the lives of unsuspecting citizens. Although a book of fiction, this novel was inspired by real stories, painstaking research, and victims’ testimony. Nobody could understand why Ben Gordon jumped to his death in 1964. He was a healthy young man with a loving family and successful career. He appeared to love his life and was looking forward to the birth of his second child. Ben’s bereaved wife Rachel made a vow to learn what drove him to such a desperate act. Her quest for answers ultimately led to the truth about MKUltra that had its origins at the end of World War II and expanded as the Cold War took hold. Many Individuals who survived the experiments suffered permanent injuries. Because of national security concerns, they were sworn to secrecy and unable to prove wrongdoing by officials running the program. Although the CIA tried to destroy evidence of such a program, details of MKUltra became public. This novel reveals the hard work of reporters and researchers, whose tireless efforts helped to expose those details and the cover-ups. Congressional Committees conducted intensive investigations during the 1970s, and in 1976 an executive order prohibited experimentation on human subjects without their informed consent. Unfortunately, evidence exists that other research and experimental programs continue to cause harm to people who receive inadequate information about the dangers of participation. The author has dedicated this book to the individuals and families who have suffered from such programs, as well as to those who work so hard to uncover the truth.

‘A Fauxtographer’s Yankee Stadium Memoir’: the incredible story of Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal, a time travel to 1977-1984 with never published before photos

INTERVIEW

Among the most familiar faces at Yankee Stadium between 1977-1984 were Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, Ron Guidry and Tokyo Rosenthal. Tokyo who, you might ask?

Well, there was a time that Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal, known now as a singer and songwriter, envisioned and dreamed of himself as a baseball media broadcaster, beat reporter and photographer. For eight consecutive Major League seasons, “schemed and tricked” his way into the House That Ruth Built with full access to the Stadium’s field, press box, dugouts, clubhouses and even top level complimentary seats in the stands. Over that time period, he recorded very few actual player interviews and filed very few stories, but he and his attractive girlfriend/soon-to-be-wife took hundreds of photos of players, managers and coaches that have never been seen by anyone.

Incredible, isn’t it? Now you can all get to know more about this amazing story.

Book_Cover

In November 2015, Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal released his book ‘A Fauxtographer’s Yankee Stadium Memoir’. In it he not only relates his “secret story” of fooling the Yankees highly-efficient and beloved assistant to the head of public relations into issuing him media access passes every season from 1977 through 1984, but also using these passes and comp tickets to “entertain” family and friends on the field, in the press room and in the stands.

“I decided to pursue writing, not as a career, but as a way of facilitating the publishing of my pictures that are 40 years old and have never been published before. As the story that enabled me to get the credentials in order to shoot the pictures is both hilarious and somewhat of a scam, the story became as much a focus as the pictures themselves,” Tokyo told in a little chat we recently had.

Reggie_and_Toke__2

It all started in 1977 when Tokyo actually became the director of an obscure and little watched Manhattan Cable TV show called “Sports ’77.” One day that summer the host of the show, Robert Leeds, requested that Tokyo accompany him to Yankee Stadium with a crew to tape interviews with the players. Everything went so smoothly and easily that when Leeds asked Tokyo to go back up to the Stadium a couple of weeks later with a crew and a substitute host, he jumped at the opportunity. Then Leeds opened the lock that forever changed Tokyo Rosenthal’s life – he gave him the name of the woman at the Yankees, along with her personal phone number, who approved all media credential requests. So Tokyo completed the call and all arrangements – and it turned out he had made a friend with the Yankees who would be his “go-to” person for the next eight years.” In fact, by the time that August of 1977 came along, “Sports ‘77” was cancelled, but Tokyo continued to use the program’s name to secure Yankees press credentials that year.

Reggie_and_Toke

Next came the photographs – hundreds of them over the years that Tokyo shot mostly while standing on the lush green grass of the Yankee Stadium field and from the photographers’ box. Photos of Yankees and of visiting team players that have never been published before. Action and posed and relaxing. Billy Martin, Bucky Dent, Goose Gossage, Davey Lopes, Dick Howser, Thurman Munson, Jerry Remy, Graig Nettles and many, many more. Tokyo proudly says that in all of the time he “covered” the Yankees, no players, managers, coaches, front office personnel, grounds crew members, security officers or bat boys ever questioned what he was doing, who he was doing it for or why he was there.

Mantle_Maris

“That was a time of, shall we say, relaxed security,” recalls Marty Appel, the Yankees’ PR official from 1968-77 (he left before the ’77 season started) and author of “Pinstripe Empire. “Today, Tokyo Rosenthal wouldn’t get closer to Yankee Stadium than Weehawken, New Jersey. But his end product is definitely worth visiting: Yankees history before digital photography and a visit to some great memories of the past. Enjoy the time travel.”

Yogi_and_Toke

“Was getting this book published hard?” I asked Tokyo.

“Getting the book published in today’s free enterprise world was not too had, especially considering it’s an E-Book, and E-Books seem to be in demand as of late. It was much harder to find someone who was capable of doing the layout, with pictures and captions. I was very lucky to find Kylie Jenkin who was brilliant in putting it all together for me.

All the people mentioned in the book are real characters, many of them famous athletes. It’s totally non-fiction, though to some it may seem like a fictional tale, LOL!

In fact, it’s a non-fiction sports picture and story book. There’s the lead in story and then there’s approx. 130 pictures along with captions. As this is my only publication, it’s clearly my favorite!”

world_series_cred

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“No real routine as a non-fiction writer but a routine as a song writer, where I write when a project comes up, ie a new album. So if another book came up I’d embrace it at that point.”

  • What are your current projects?

“My current project is promoting this book which entails going on sports talk radio, speaking to newspaper and web site journalists, and networking on social sites.”

  • What’s next for you?

“We’re discussing a limited edition hard copy that would be signed by a NY Yankee played from that era. And who knows, I might write a novel. Other than that I continue to record and tour for my singer-songwriter career.”

keighley_hand

Rosenthals’s other passion and talent is music, as he is a successful songwriter, recording artist, singer and performer whose newest album, “Afterlife” was released in the US and in Europe in September 2015. His music and talents have been compared highly to superstars like James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Don Henley.

Author Marcela Del Sol on her upcoming book “Kaleidoscope” inspired by her experience living with PTSD

INTERVIEW

Marcela Del Sol, is an Australian writer, born in Chile. She is a social activist and has been a model, an indie arts crusader and ghost writer.

She has recently decided to launch her first self-signed book, called “Kaleidoscope”, in early 2016. Marcela’s book is based on her personal experience living with PTSD and Dissociative Identity Disorder. I wanted to know more about Marcela, so I simply asked her…

  • Who exactly is Marcela Del Sol?

“A palette of infinite colours! I am a grateful and brave human being, a proud and loving mother, a woman who stands for fairness and justice. I am a bit of a free spirit that also likes high couture.

I was born in Chile and been living in Australia for over 20 years, I studied dramatic arts and justice related courses, I am a writer first and foremost (it is my way of exorcising my inner demons and to appease my soul’s appetite), a social activist and a woman who wants to make a difference.”

pic2_interv

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“Who I am and why I write are aspects of my life that cannot be separated. After writing for others, I decided to do it for me as a way to appease my inner demons and to pour out all that continuously builds in me. I was diagnosed with a complicated mental disorder in 2013 and wanted to raise awareness and understanding about it, I would like this world to become friendlier and more inclusive. I am a Mum and also run social/cultural projects in at risk areas in Chile as I would like to contribute to a better world where my kids rejoice.

I didn’t follow a mainstream publishing avenue, I am a crusader for indie arts and thought I would go on my own. It has been a hard process; revisiting the manuscript many times, not sleeping, losing the plot, trying to maintain coherence while experience this condition has been a whole challenge on its own but having a wonderful editor has made a big difference.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Kaleidoscope” depicts my life co-existing with PTSD and dissociative identity disorder, the characters and situations are fictional but based on real events and people. I have tried to show what it is like to live like someone with DID; the stories are fictional but the process to get to them is not, if that makes any sense.”

interv3

  • What genre is your book?

“I suppose you could say it is semi biographical but also an erotic thriller. I have thought a lot about it and I cannot really come to a specific genre on this. I promise I will! Let’s call it fiction for now.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“I am in love with my current project, I feel I have birthed a creature of courage, strength, resilience and pride. It is a very intimate account of my life to some extent; the simple fact of coming out about my life has been, and still is, very bedazzling. I am aware of the judgment and discrimination I might have to face but I also feel it is a story of many that needs to be told.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I’m not very disciplined, I cannot be (see how hard it is to have DID?) as it is very hard for me to abide by structured and inflexible schedules but I try to respond to my urge to write as soon as it cannot be held anymore, which is constant. I usually work better at night; the problem is the tiredness you feel when sleeping only a couple of hours…but it is worth it!”

pic_interv

  • What are your current projects?

“I am currently wrapping up this book, with the amazing help of my editor. We will have it ready for you and your readers to enjoy by March 2016. I will also soon be in Chile to start implementing a social/cultural project I launched in August where I aim to encourage kids at risk to develop and communicate through art, to give them wider aspirations and to make them feel validated as they should be.”

  • What’s next for you?

“I am also working on an erotic poetry book and would like to be able to share it with the world in the near future. In the meantime, I would like to just be a good human being.

Thank you very much for your time and the opportunity to share my new baby with you!”

My pleasure, Marcela! Your book sounds interesting, please keep us posted on its release.

Lulu_Rea

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“My inspiration to pen this book came from two truly important influences in my life. The first is my beloved mother who has always been the ultimate superwoman in my life. She raised my sister and I to be the strong and independent young ladies that we are today. Her example as a mother is truly what catapulted the idea for this book. It is also why I know that I am qualified to write such a book.

The second inspiration is my mentor and friend, Kaye-Cee Austin- who is also the Founder of TeenTrep.Co, the parent company to my company, ToddlerTown.Co. Kaye-Cee has always believed in me and has always seen aspects in me that I did not see for myself. She pushes me to be the best version of myself that I can be- even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone to do it. I am truly blessed to have both of these women in my life!”

  • Was getting published hard?

“We have a really amazing team at TeenTrep that assists of its Teen authors and founders with all of their projects and assisting us in the publishing process is one of the things they do very well. So I’d have to say, because of them- getting published has been easy on my end.”

  • What is the book about?

“The book incorporates many of the lessons I have learned throughout my life when working with children and of course the insight that I have to share just from being a child at one point myself. I also interviewed many experts in the child services field as well as kids and teens to ensure that the insight from the book was based on real world facts and experiences.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I enjoy writing so I always make sure that I take time out of the day to write. Even if it means not attending as many events as usual or hanging out with my friends at times- I will make sure that I get my writing in!”

  • So what’s next for you?

“Focusing on my company, its growth and its customers. I am truly passionate about children and assisting parents in making life as easy as we can for them so that will always be what I am focused on. I am also currently spending much of my days filling out college applications believe it or not. Education is very important to me so I want to ensure I get the best one that I can!”

Author JESSie NW on ‘The Solomon Sisters’ trilogy and the upcoming ‘Fasten Your Seat Belts’

INTERVIEW

‘What a personal story is that!” That’s what I told myself after the little chat I had with ‘The Solomon Sisters’ series author JESSie NW. I was shocked by what she’d been through and amazed by her courage to overcome the difficulties; the kind of difficulties that create great books and successful authors…

mask

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I did not consciously decide to pursue a writing career. My mother is a retired Professor who majored in English Writing.

There strict unwritten rules regarding English in our home i.e. reading, writing, homework but especially speaking clearly and enunciating. Sooo… we fast-forward 25+ years to getting married and having my husband abruptly taken from me during a robbery. I needed and finally accepted emotional therapy where I dealt with the anger, pain and grief surrounding this pain of being a 29-year old pregnant widow.

The self-medication came in the form or words on paper. I was successful in a few industries as a professional Project Manager. I then branched off on my own to assist small businesses in becoming successful entities, but found people rarely know what they really want from a business. They just want to make widgets and be happy. Oh and the business to be successful. The market did not bode as Small Business funding decrease and my motivation to chase clients dwindled because my private life kept intercepting due to my lack of trust for real happiness. I could not sustain a real relationship because of my fixation on my deceased husband. Therefore, I married and divorced after his death, failing in the marriage by putting my work first.

Finally, 11 years after his Charles death, I decided to be a cog in the wheel of the government where I put in my hours and jumped ship at the minimum tenure to pursue what always soothed my soul. Writing. I stopped running from it and embraced it with fervor. So technically my writing career pursued me. When I finally stopped running and gave in to its healing powers, I published my first book in June of 2013.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“No, putting the book on the shelf is not hard. Marketing, distribution and publicity is a daily challenge.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Not really, but yes. I use characteristics from various people and build one person with multiple personalities from real sources.”

  • What genre are your books?

“Fiction/Romance/Comedy/Suspense. The genre is multi-faceted as I am; all based from an African American Female voice because it really is impossible to write what you do not know. ”

The_Plastic_Face_Cover

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“My favorite book is ‘Fasten Your Seat Belts’. It is not published; in fact, it is not complete. I spent 10 years with the Department of Homeland Security and watching the public is humorous and enlightening. I learned to be a better human being by watching people do things that should be socially unacceptable. I also learned there is a way to achieve results without making a scene. Very few people know how to do this, either they accept the situation with no voice, or they use their voice to detriment. This book points out our human flaws and indelicacies in the work place and in our public interactions.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Oh how I wish I could regal you with a patented tried and true work ethic for writing. But alas no, when life is not in my way i.e. cooking, washing clothes, dentist appointment’s, Mafia Wars, husband, holidays, marketing, relatives, etc. I write. I let the voices in my head have the conversations on paper and I fill in the scenarios that surround these conversations. Sometimes the conversations go back to high school with a teacher who was bullying me… and I let my voices reply. Often I do not realize these unresolved situations until the storyline in that chapter is complete.”

  • What are your current projects?

The Solomon Sisters are going to Italy to meet their illegitimate sister in Arms of Steel due for release in April 2016. Finishing the trilogy are Feet of Granite due for release in October of 2016. In between there, Fasten Your Seat Belts will fall on a shelf near you.”

  • What’s next for you?

“In 2016 I would like to see a virtual book tour each month and a physical book tour every other month, maybe even two straight months with 3 relaxing months in between. My husband is working on a schedule now and you can see the results by January 15, 2016 by signing up on Facebook or my Website for JESSie sightings during the year.”
