Leah Rae Lambert, author of ‘The Unveiling’ and ‘Shred of Evidence’, on writing novels based on true stories

INTERVIEW

Leah Rae Lambert began her writing career after early retirement from public service in Toronto, Ontario, where she makes her home. Her first book, The Unveiling, drew from her mother’s experiences escaping the hardships of life in Eastern Europe and struggling as an immigrant to fit into a new society. In Shred of Evidence, her second novel, Leah Rae Lambert drew inspiration from real experience, painstaking research, and documented testimony to tell the story of a woman’s determination to uncover the truth about her husband’s shocking death in the face of secret government programs and cover-ups.

Book_Signing

  • What was the hardest part of writing your book?

“Keeping the focus on Rachel’s search for answers about her husband’s death without getting too immersed in the historical details of the MKUltra Program and its mind-control activities.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Many of the characters in my books are inspired by real people, but some are totally fictional. My inspiration for my first book, The Unveiling, came from stories of my mother’s life. My second book, Shred of Evidence, is based on true stories, documented research and victim testimony. The book follows one woman’s quest to discover the reason for her husband’s suicide and leads to the CIA’s secret program of mind control experiments on unsuspecting citizens. These experiments took place during the Cold War. I have dedicated the book to the many individuals and families who suffered because of the experiments and to the researchers and journalists who worked so hard to get to the truth. My first book was historical fiction and the latest book is more contemporary fiction and political intrigue. I enjoy doing the background research for the books and was quite shocked at what I learned about the MKUltra Program.

I hope people will find the book a good read. In addition, I hope it will lead to greater understanding and discussion about the dangers of research on people without their consent and full understanding of the risks. Ultimately I hope this understanding will help reduce the likelihood of such programs in the future.”

  • While you were writing, did you ever feel connected to one of the characters?

“Yes, because Rachel was inspired by some of my own experiences. However, the story was not a memoir so I was free to take her on a different journey than I went on personally. That is the joy of writing fiction.”

  • Do you see writing as a career?

“Writing is my second career. I began writing after early retirement from a career in public service. I’m glad I’ve been lucky enough to have a successful career as a director of research and planning, and can now devote myself to writing without expecting to make a living from it. I admire and respect writers who devote themselves to writing at an earlier stage in their lives. From what I have learned, it is very difficult for writing to bring financial success.”

  • What inspired you to write your first book?

“For my first book, The Unveiling, I got my inspiration from my mother and grandmother and the stories they told me as I was growing up. These were stories about their struggles to survive in Eastern Europe and their harrowing escape to the United States. There they faced new struggles as immigrants trying to fit into a new society. The focus of the book is on the burden of family secrets and how the truth can be liberating. I always knew I would write this story and did extensive interviews with family members before writing the book.”

386918_6356f9293df449d596e30209d5ff4268

  • What are your favorite books to give and get as gifts?

“I love to give my own books as gifts to people who I think will enjoy them. I also like to give books about subjects I know are important to the recipients. For instance, for people who love theater, I try to find new books about the theater and the people who have made contributions to it. If someone is a sports fan, I enjoy finding a book about sports for that person.

Books I enjoy receiving as gifts are usually books about real people who accomplished something significant or who have overcome challenges. These might be historical fiction, memoirs or biographies. I also enjoy receiving books about the theater.”

  • A message to your readers?

“Yes, I hope you enjoy Shred of Evidence. If you do, please tell your friends about it or even post a review on amazon. I’d love to have your feedback, so drop me a line via email. And if you enjoy this book, you might want to read my first novel, The Unveiling.”

FUN FACTS ABOUT LEAH RAE LAMBERT

“My first job was as a sixth grade teacher in an inner city school in Pittsburgh, PA. During my first week, a parent came to the door and when I went to speak with him, he asked me if I would please find the teacher for him to talk with. I stayed in that setting for two years and found it the most difficult and also most rewarding job I ever had, even though my career later involved research and planning in the criminal justice system. I taught for another 2 years in the suburbs of Washington, D.C . and experienced a different set of challenges.”

“Moving to Toronto, Ontario was an exciting experience and I have enjoyed making Toronto my home. I enjoy the diversity of the city and the lively cultural scene. For years my family had a cottage on a lake north of Toronto where it was fun to swim, boat, and hike. The drives back and forth became stressful, but I loved being near the water. I now live in a condo on Toronto’s waterfront and enjoy the peacefulness of my view onto Lake Ontario.”

“My daughter decided on a career in the theater and won a Tony award for the best original score for a Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, that she co-wrote with a writing partner. Sitting beside her in the Radio City Musical Hall the night she won the award was thrilling for both of us. Both she and my son have always been fun to be around.”

“I love the theater. Trips to New York are great, particularly when I can see the original cast in a new show. I love to attend plays in Toronto and also in Stratford and Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. Now that I spend my winter s in Florida, I try to attend as many shows as possible in various local venues.”

“I do not like winter weather or snow although once I moved to Toronto, I tried to enjoy it. I even took up cross-country skiing and found it exhilarating. But now that I am able to spend winters in Florida, I am happy to be away from the snow and enjoy the sunshine and beach. Although I am not a great swimmer, I love being near the water. I also enjoy getting to the cottage country of Ontario in summers and to walk through the wooded areas.”

“Since I was quite young I have been a baseball fan. My first team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. When Toronto got its team, I also became a great fan of the Blue Jays.”

“I’ve been dividing my time between Toronto and Marco Island, Florida, and my next venture will use that experience for background.”

Shred of Evidence

Shred of Evidence reveals the shocking details of the CIA’s MKUltra program of mind control experiments that endangered and destroyed the lives of unsuspecting citizens. Although a book of fiction, this novel was inspired by real stories, painstaking research, and victims’ testimony. Nobody could understand why Ben Gordon jumped to his death in 1964. He was a healthy young man with a loving family and successful career. He appeared to love his life and was looking forward to the birth of his second child. Ben’s bereaved wife Rachel made a vow to learn what drove him to such a desperate act. Her quest for answers ultimately led to the truth about MKUltra that had its origins at the end of World War II and expanded as the Cold War took hold. Many Individuals who survived the experiments suffered permanent injuries. Because of national security concerns, they were sworn to secrecy and unable to prove wrongdoing by officials running the program. Although the CIA tried to destroy evidence of such a program, details of MKUltra became public. This novel reveals the hard work of reporters and researchers, whose tireless efforts helped to expose those details and the cover-ups. Congressional Committees conducted intensive investigations during the 1970s, and in 1976 an executive order prohibited experimentation on human subjects without their informed consent. Unfortunately, evidence exists that other research and experimental programs continue to cause harm to people who receive inadequate information about the dangers of participation. The author has dedicated this book to the individuals and families who have suffered from such programs, as well as to those who work so hard to uncover the truth.

‘A Fauxtographer’s Yankee Stadium Memoir’: the incredible story of Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal, a time travel to 1977-1984 with never published before photos

INTERVIEW

Among the most familiar faces at Yankee Stadium between 1977-1984 were Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, Ron Guidry and Tokyo Rosenthal. Tokyo who, you might ask?

Well, there was a time that Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal, known now as a singer and songwriter, envisioned and dreamed of himself as a baseball media broadcaster, beat reporter and photographer. For eight consecutive Major League seasons, “schemed and tricked” his way into the House That Ruth Built with full access to the Stadium’s field, press box, dugouts, clubhouses and even top level complimentary seats in the stands. Over that time period, he recorded very few actual player interviews and filed very few stories, but he and his attractive girlfriend/soon-to-be-wife took hundreds of photos of players, managers and coaches that have never been seen by anyone.

Incredible, isn’t it? Now you can all get to know more about this amazing story.

Book_Cover

In November 2015, Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal released his book ‘A Fauxtographer’s Yankee Stadium Memoir’. In it he not only relates his “secret story” of fooling the Yankees highly-efficient and beloved assistant to the head of public relations into issuing him media access passes every season from 1977 through 1984, but also using these passes and comp tickets to “entertain” family and friends on the field, in the press room and in the stands.

“I decided to pursue writing, not as a career, but as a way of facilitating the publishing of my pictures that are 40 years old and have never been published before. As the story that enabled me to get the credentials in order to shoot the pictures is both hilarious and somewhat of a scam, the story became as much a focus as the pictures themselves,” Tokyo told in a little chat we recently had.

Reggie_and_Toke__2

It all started in 1977 when Tokyo actually became the director of an obscure and little watched Manhattan Cable TV show called “Sports ’77.” One day that summer the host of the show, Robert Leeds, requested that Tokyo accompany him to Yankee Stadium with a crew to tape interviews with the players. Everything went so smoothly and easily that when Leeds asked Tokyo to go back up to the Stadium a couple of weeks later with a crew and a substitute host, he jumped at the opportunity. Then Leeds opened the lock that forever changed Tokyo Rosenthal’s life – he gave him the name of the woman at the Yankees, along with her personal phone number, who approved all media credential requests. So Tokyo completed the call and all arrangements – and it turned out he had made a friend with the Yankees who would be his “go-to” person for the next eight years.” In fact, by the time that August of 1977 came along, “Sports ‘77” was cancelled, but Tokyo continued to use the program’s name to secure Yankees press credentials that year.

Reggie_and_Toke

Next came the photographs – hundreds of them over the years that Tokyo shot mostly while standing on the lush green grass of the Yankee Stadium field and from the photographers’ box. Photos of Yankees and of visiting team players that have never been published before. Action and posed and relaxing. Billy Martin, Bucky Dent, Goose Gossage, Davey Lopes, Dick Howser, Thurman Munson, Jerry Remy, Graig Nettles and many, many more. Tokyo proudly says that in all of the time he “covered” the Yankees, no players, managers, coaches, front office personnel, grounds crew members, security officers or bat boys ever questioned what he was doing, who he was doing it for or why he was there.

Mantle_Maris

“That was a time of, shall we say, relaxed security,” recalls Marty Appel, the Yankees’ PR official from 1968-77 (he left before the ’77 season started) and author of “Pinstripe Empire. “Today, Tokyo Rosenthal wouldn’t get closer to Yankee Stadium than Weehawken, New Jersey. But his end product is definitely worth visiting: Yankees history before digital photography and a visit to some great memories of the past. Enjoy the time travel.”

Yogi_and_Toke

“Was getting this book published hard?” I asked Tokyo.

“Getting the book published in today’s free enterprise world was not too had, especially considering it’s an E-Book, and E-Books seem to be in demand as of late. It was much harder to find someone who was capable of doing the layout, with pictures and captions. I was very lucky to find Kylie Jenkin who was brilliant in putting it all together for me.

All the people mentioned in the book are real characters, many of them famous athletes. It’s totally non-fiction, though to some it may seem like a fictional tale, LOL!

In fact, it’s a non-fiction sports picture and story book. There’s the lead in story and then there’s approx. 130 pictures along with captions. As this is my only publication, it’s clearly my favorite!”

world_series_cred

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“No real routine as a non-fiction writer but a routine as a song writer, where I write when a project comes up, ie a new album. So if another book came up I’d embrace it at that point.”

  • What are your current projects?

“My current project is promoting this book which entails going on sports talk radio, speaking to newspaper and web site journalists, and networking on social sites.”

  • What’s next for you?

“We’re discussing a limited edition hard copy that would be signed by a NY Yankee played from that era. And who knows, I might write a novel. Other than that I continue to record and tour for my singer-songwriter career.”

keighley_hand

Rosenthals’s other passion and talent is music, as he is a successful songwriter, recording artist, singer and performer whose newest album, “Afterlife” was released in the US and in Europe in September 2015. His music and talents have been compared highly to superstars like James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Don Henley.

Author Marcela Del Sol on her upcoming book “Kaleidoscope” inspired by her experience living with PTSD

INTERVIEW

Marcela Del Sol, is an Australian writer, born in Chile. She is a social activist and has been a model, an indie arts crusader and ghost writer.

She has recently decided to launch her first self-signed book, called “Kaleidoscope”, in early 2016. Marcela’s book is based on her personal experience living with PTSD and Dissociative Identity Disorder. I wanted to know more about Marcela, so I simply asked her…

  • Who exactly is Marcela Del Sol?

“A palette of infinite colours! I am a grateful and brave human being, a proud and loving mother, a woman who stands for fairness and justice. I am a bit of a free spirit that also likes high couture.

I was born in Chile and been living in Australia for over 20 years, I studied dramatic arts and justice related courses, I am a writer first and foremost (it is my way of exorcising my inner demons and to appease my soul’s appetite), a social activist and a woman who wants to make a difference.”

pic2_interv

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“Who I am and why I write are aspects of my life that cannot be separated. After writing for others, I decided to do it for me as a way to appease my inner demons and to pour out all that continuously builds in me. I was diagnosed with a complicated mental disorder in 2013 and wanted to raise awareness and understanding about it, I would like this world to become friendlier and more inclusive. I am a Mum and also run social/cultural projects in at risk areas in Chile as I would like to contribute to a better world where my kids rejoice.

I didn’t follow a mainstream publishing avenue, I am a crusader for indie arts and thought I would go on my own. It has been a hard process; revisiting the manuscript many times, not sleeping, losing the plot, trying to maintain coherence while experience this condition has been a whole challenge on its own but having a wonderful editor has made a big difference.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Kaleidoscope” depicts my life co-existing with PTSD and dissociative identity disorder, the characters and situations are fictional but based on real events and people. I have tried to show what it is like to live like someone with DID; the stories are fictional but the process to get to them is not, if that makes any sense.”

interv3

  • What genre is your book?

“I suppose you could say it is semi biographical but also an erotic thriller. I have thought a lot about it and I cannot really come to a specific genre on this. I promise I will! Let’s call it fiction for now.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“I am in love with my current project, I feel I have birthed a creature of courage, strength, resilience and pride. It is a very intimate account of my life to some extent; the simple fact of coming out about my life has been, and still is, very bedazzling. I am aware of the judgment and discrimination I might have to face but I also feel it is a story of many that needs to be told.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I’m not very disciplined, I cannot be (see how hard it is to have DID?) as it is very hard for me to abide by structured and inflexible schedules but I try to respond to my urge to write as soon as it cannot be held anymore, which is constant. I usually work better at night; the problem is the tiredness you feel when sleeping only a couple of hours…but it is worth it!”

pic_interv

  • What are your current projects?

“I am currently wrapping up this book, with the amazing help of my editor. We will have it ready for you and your readers to enjoy by March 2016. I will also soon be in Chile to start implementing a social/cultural project I launched in August where I aim to encourage kids at risk to develop and communicate through art, to give them wider aspirations and to make them feel validated as they should be.”

  • What’s next for you?

“I am also working on an erotic poetry book and would like to be able to share it with the world in the near future. In the meantime, I would like to just be a good human being.

Thank you very much for your time and the opportunity to share my new baby with you!”

My pleasure, Marcela! Your book sounds interesting, please keep us posted on its release.

Lulu_Rea

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“My inspiration to pen this book came from two truly important influences in my life. The first is my beloved mother who has always been the ultimate superwoman in my life. She raised my sister and I to be the strong and independent young ladies that we are today. Her example as a mother is truly what catapulted the idea for this book. It is also why I know that I am qualified to write such a book.

The second inspiration is my mentor and friend, Kaye-Cee Austin- who is also the Founder of TeenTrep.Co, the parent company to my company, ToddlerTown.Co. Kaye-Cee has always believed in me and has always seen aspects in me that I did not see for myself. She pushes me to be the best version of myself that I can be- even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone to do it. I am truly blessed to have both of these women in my life!”

  • Was getting published hard?

“We have a really amazing team at TeenTrep that assists of its Teen authors and founders with all of their projects and assisting us in the publishing process is one of the things they do very well. So I’d have to say, because of them- getting published has been easy on my end.”

  • What is the book about?

“The book incorporates many of the lessons I have learned throughout my life when working with children and of course the insight that I have to share just from being a child at one point myself. I also interviewed many experts in the child services field as well as kids and teens to ensure that the insight from the book was based on real world facts and experiences.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I enjoy writing so I always make sure that I take time out of the day to write. Even if it means not attending as many events as usual or hanging out with my friends at times- I will make sure that I get my writing in!”

  • So what’s next for you?

“Focusing on my company, its growth and its customers. I am truly passionate about children and assisting parents in making life as easy as we can for them so that will always be what I am focused on. I am also currently spending much of my days filling out college applications believe it or not. Education is very important to me so I want to ensure I get the best one that I can!”

‘Murder By Association: A Stanford Carter Prequel’ by Gary Starta

REVIEW

This is a book that you just can’t put down once you start it. I read it in less than a day. The characters are well developed, complex and multi-faceted. The story is built in such a wonderful way that leaves you rooting for their success and fearing for their safety. Gary Starta did an amazing job creating twists and turns that left me guessing from beginning to end. The book gets off to a great start with a short prologue. A guy has just killed four women and two men lead by his distaste “for a crazy little thing called love”. It’s a guy who gets angry “every time a stranger passed him by without so much a nod or salutation”. The ending is at once unexpected and darkly emotional the way every great noir mystery is. “Lost in the character” as Gary Starta writes…

** I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review**

Author JESSie NW on ‘The Solomon Sisters’ trilogy and the upcoming ‘Fasten Your Seat Belts’

INTERVIEW

‘What a personal story is that!” That’s what I told myself after the little chat I had with ‘The Solomon Sisters’ series author JESSie NW. I was shocked by what she’d been through and amazed by her courage to overcome the difficulties; the kind of difficulties that create great books and successful authors…

mask

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I did not consciously decide to pursue a writing career. My mother is a retired Professor who majored in English Writing.

There strict unwritten rules regarding English in our home i.e. reading, writing, homework but especially speaking clearly and enunciating. Sooo… we fast-forward 25+ years to getting married and having my husband abruptly taken from me during a robbery. I needed and finally accepted emotional therapy where I dealt with the anger, pain and grief surrounding this pain of being a 29-year old pregnant widow.

The self-medication came in the form or words on paper. I was successful in a few industries as a professional Project Manager. I then branched off on my own to assist small businesses in becoming successful entities, but found people rarely know what they really want from a business. They just want to make widgets and be happy. Oh and the business to be successful. The market did not bode as Small Business funding decrease and my motivation to chase clients dwindled because my private life kept intercepting due to my lack of trust for real happiness. I could not sustain a real relationship because of my fixation on my deceased husband. Therefore, I married and divorced after his death, failing in the marriage by putting my work first.

Finally, 11 years after his Charles death, I decided to be a cog in the wheel of the government where I put in my hours and jumped ship at the minimum tenure to pursue what always soothed my soul. Writing. I stopped running from it and embraced it with fervor. So technically my writing career pursued me. When I finally stopped running and gave in to its healing powers, I published my first book in June of 2013.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“No, putting the book on the shelf is not hard. Marketing, distribution and publicity is a daily challenge.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Not really, but yes. I use characteristics from various people and build one person with multiple personalities from real sources.”

  • What genre are your books?

“Fiction/Romance/Comedy/Suspense. The genre is multi-faceted as I am; all based from an African American Female voice because it really is impossible to write what you do not know. ”

The_Plastic_Face_Cover

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“My favorite book is ‘Fasten Your Seat Belts’. It is not published; in fact, it is not complete. I spent 10 years with the Department of Homeland Security and watching the public is humorous and enlightening. I learned to be a better human being by watching people do things that should be socially unacceptable. I also learned there is a way to achieve results without making a scene. Very few people know how to do this, either they accept the situation with no voice, or they use their voice to detriment. This book points out our human flaws and indelicacies in the work place and in our public interactions.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Oh how I wish I could regal you with a patented tried and true work ethic for writing. But alas no, when life is not in my way i.e. cooking, washing clothes, dentist appointment’s, Mafia Wars, husband, holidays, marketing, relatives, etc. I write. I let the voices in my head have the conversations on paper and I fill in the scenarios that surround these conversations. Sometimes the conversations go back to high school with a teacher who was bullying me… and I let my voices reply. Often I do not realize these unresolved situations until the storyline in that chapter is complete.”

‘Life’s Defeat’ by Rebekah Raymond

REVIEW

‘No one ever tells you what it is like to die’. No one, except this book’s heroine whose name isn’t mentioned not even once throughout the book. How original is that! ‘Life’s Defeat’ is based on a very interesting and well thought out story. I liked the idea and characters are well developed. The action starts on the first page and doesn’t let up till the last. I loved Rebekah Raymond’s writing. Her descriptions are so vivid that I felt to the core her heroine’s agony and claustrophobic sensation caused by the unknown and the numerous trials she was forced to be through. The ending left some questions unanswered but I’ll happily read ‘Life’s Hope’ Book 2 in the series hoping that answers will be provided.

* I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

cover

Tragedy places the soldier in StPatrick’s complex, determination to be someone of use keeps her within its walls. When she finally takes her first breaths of freedom, the soldier is sucked back into military servitude. Her long, violent capture and imprisonment by Rochester sets her path of physical and psychological terror.

Under his rule she learns the depth of her own depravity, and how far she can go before she threatens to lose herself. But when Tomlin and his team rescues her, she discovers a new threat in the life she chooses to lead.

As the pages of her genetically-altered history are revealed, the solider finds the key to achieving her new goal: revenge.

It’s unfortunate it might just kill her in the end.

Rebekah Raymond is a born and bred Canadian, now residing in Calgary, Alberta with her husband, two children and a handful of animals. Rebekah was always a reader and writer, early on picking up Shakespeare and writing her own poetry. She has also been a trekkie for years, a habit that led to compulsive and creative writing through interactive role playing games online.

Rebekah attended a non-traditional high school and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Drawing, from Alberta College of Art + Design. She later received her Academic Strategist Certificate from the University of Calgary. She is extremely musically inclined, participating in main choir for over 10 years, the women’s choir for four, as well as band and instrumental group via the violin. Of course she supports all of the arts, having worked in an art gallery for years and purchased many pieces herself.

Rebekah launched her first novel, “Life’s Defeat” October 7, 2015. A psychological thriller than began years ago as a short story, the tale has now extended into a series, with book two and three expected out in 2016. Twisted and violent, this first book leads the reader into a world where criminal discipline is left to extraneous means. Walking in the footsteps of a young woman who comes into the realization of who and what she is, this novel will take you from one extreme to the next, watching for justice and always waiting for more…

Author Alyssa Rae talks about ‘A Lion’s Pride’ and ‘A Rebel Star’

INTERVIEW

Alyssa Rae was born in Massachusetts and currently resides in a small, historic town in North Carolina. She is a devoted and enthusiastic reader, writer, and movie goer. Her debut novel, A Lion’s Pride, was published in early 2013. A Rebel Star is her second novel.

Alyssa told me more about her book in a interesting conversation we had a few days ago…

author_pic_2015_300dpi

  • First of all, I’d like to ask you who exactly Alyssa Rae is.

“I am 25 years old. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in North Carolina, raised by a half Irish-half Italian family. My family alone gives me enough material to write many books, perhaps one day I’ll focus on that. I love to write, play the piano, and think up stories for young adults.”

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I’ve always loved writing. As soon as I was able to put a pen to paper I would write these silly, sometimes awful, poems for my Mom. In high school I took creative writing and journalism classes. I had so many notebooks filled with short stories and story ideas that one day I decided I just needed to finish one. I picked the story that had the most material and a year later I published A Lion’s Pride.”

  • Was getting published hard?

“I self-published both of my books using Amazon’s Createspace platform. Createspace makes publishing very fast and easy, especially for someone with little or no experience with publishing.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“None of my main characters in either book are based on people I know, but several of my friends and family members have made appearances as minor characters.”

  • What genre are your books?

“My books are written for teens and young adults. Both feature strong, independent, young women, action, and a little bit of romance.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

A Lion’s Pride will always be special to me because it was my first completed novel, but I have truly enjoyed immersing myself in the Ogoni people’s struggle featured in A Rebel Star.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“I always outline my stories in bullet points first. I make a list of all the characters and the major events and their details so I have something to reference while I am writing. The very first chapter that I write is the ending; I have to know where the story is going to take me before I can start the beginning. I also don’t write everything in order. I like to start with writing the scenes that are the most vivid in my mind. I can always tweak them later if I decide to make changes to the story.”

  • What are your current projects?

“I am currently working on the second book of the Rebel Star series. I am also working on the first novella for the series which will be written from Danny’s point of view.”

  • What’s next for you?

“I really enjoy writing for teens and young adults and am hoping to publish many more books within this genre.”

‘Missing Andy’ author, Lori A. Moore on her new book ‘Oh Ship!’

INTERVIEW

Every author has a moment in their lives that lead them to choose the path of storytelling. Each of them has an interesting story to share about that moment, but what Lori A. Moore (author of ‘Missing Andy and ‘Oh Ship!’) shared with me is one of the most interesting how-I-became-an-author stories I’ve ever heard.

Here is what Lori told me in this fun intereview…

Moore Headshot 1

  • How did you decide to pursue a writing career?

“I didn’t! My former husband died in 2008 and a friend suggested that I journal as a way to deal with my grief. I turned that journal into a book about dealing with grief after the loss of a loved one in the book, ‘Missing Andy: The Journey From Grief to Joy’.

  • Was getting published hard?

“Surprisingly, no. It might be hard for some to understand or believe, but I’ll tell you how it happened. I was asked to share my testimony at a church in a neighboring state. After the service was over, a woman walked up to me and said, “God told me you’re going to write a book.” To make a long story short, she had even mentioned the name of a publisher she had researched. After my former husband died and I was journaling, I remembered the name of the publisher that the woman had said, looked them up on the internet, submitted my manuscript, and you could knock me over with a feather because they accepted it and offered me a book contract.”

  • Are your characters based on people you know?

“Yes, all of them. My first book, From Zero to Christian in Just 35 Years, which I wrote simultaneously with Missing Andy: The Journey From Grief to Joy, is about me and how it happened that I walked into church for the first time in my life at age 35. ‘Missing Andy’ is about the loss of my former husband. My first children’s book, ‘Grady the Gray Cat Gets Adopted’, is about our cat, Grady, who we adopted from the Humane Society and the second children’s book, ‘Hannah the Hedgehog Goes to Heaven’ was written about how to deal with the death of a pet because of my losing two of my precious cats in a two year period. My most recent book, ‘Oh Ship! Tales of a Cruising Chick and Other Travel Adventures’ is about my visits to 50-something other countries and my next book, to be released in Summer 2016, has characters fashioned after real people.”

  • What genre are your books?

“Apparently I’m a ‘mutt’ author because two are Christian Living, two are Children’s, one is Travel Humor, and one will be Suspense.”

  • Which of your books is your most favorite?

“Can a parent pick a favorite child? Geesh! Okay, if I HAVE TO pick one so far, I’d say ‘Missing Andy’ because readers have given me so much feedback about how it has helped them and I meant it also as a tribute to a wonderful man.”

  • Do you have a specific writing routine?

“Routine? You haven’t met me, have you?!”

  • What are your current projects?

“Depending upon the success of ‘Oh Ship!’, I hope to write a sequel, ‘Oh Ship 2: More Ship Happens’, as I continue to travel and experience new adventures.”

  • What’s next for you?

“So many ideas, so little time.”
