“The Insomniacs’ Club: Thrills, Spills & Sleeping Pills” by Vasily Pugh

REVIEW

I’ll say it straight forward. I loved this book. Simple as that. I loved it. I’m a fan of mystery stories. I’m especially fan of British mystery stories. Furthermore, I travelled in Japan many years ago and I was amazed by Japanese culture. I also like meeting weird people and reading about odd characters. Not to mention that I’m an insomniac myself. So, loving this book came naturally to me. It has all the above.

However, this is not a typical British mystery story. The author has given a refreshing twist to the genre by having a Japanese ex-pat as the main character accompanied by a woman named Henri. (I know, you just thought “what?!”) This book is so fast paced, wonderfully written and full of twists that I read it through during last weekend. I’d definitely love to read more from this author.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

When Japanese ex-pat Naoka meets Henri, a middle-aged woman who is both wildly unconventional and is hiding something that she refuses to share, she finds herself introduced to a collection of oddities who share the same hindrance. They are all insomniacs.
This chance meeting soon provides Naoka with a much greater problem, when she and Henri become inadvertently caught up with the Fresno-DeBeers family, whose daughter has been kidnapped.
Henri is determined to ‘help’ the police with their investigation, and the Fresno-DeBeers to find their daughter, and enlists the assistance of the unwilling Naoka as part of her efforts.
As they get deeper and deeper into the case, living among oddballs and eccentric insomniacs who live their lives during the hours of darkness, they encounter the often weird and sometimes dangerous characters who inhabit the night.
But can they really make a difference to the case? Are they really able to provide anything of value and will they find the Fresno-DeBeers’ daughter before it is too late?
The Insomniacs’ Club is a page-turner that will have you up all night (in a good way).
Vasily Pugh, author of ‘Basically Frightened’, returns with his unusual take on crime fiction, sisterhood and suspense all whipped together with a healthy dollop of his trademark wit.

After flirting with the Top 100 list in Amazon US’ satire books with ‘Basically Frightened’, Vasily Pugh thought it time to bring his unique style to a new genre. And so the comic thriller ‘The Insomniacs’ Club’ was born, a story with two unorthodox heroines in the lead and a whole array of supporting characters to enjoy.

Pugh is always writing despite suggestions that he should stop and take better care of his sheep. He is determined to be not only Bhutan’s finest shepherd/writer, but perhaps even the world’s! (a title currently held by Zadie Smith).

‘Missing Destiny (A Chandler County Novel)’ by Traci Wooden-Carlisle

REVIEW

Missing Destiny (A Chandler County Novel) by Traci Wooden-Carlisle is a wonderful HEA Christian romance. Actually it’s a great example of how a good Christian romance should be written. Traci Wooden-Carlisle’s has crafted an inspiring story of rediscovering love and God through painful losses and life-threatening situations. This heartwarming story has also a flare of suspense that will keep you engaged until the last page. Shauna’s and Zach’s characters are well developed and Zach’s personal story is heart-breaking. There is only one thing I didn’t enjoy that much and that is the way the ID of stalker was revealed, I found it a bit weak. Nevertheless Missing Destiny is a book worth reading, especially when you’re going through a difficult moment of your life.

Stars 4.4.

‘Tridea’s Children’ by Kevin Peake

REVIEW

Tridea’s Children by Kevin Peake is a fun read for all ages. The author has created a wonderful fantasy world full of elves, crystals, humans, mythical creatures and shadow soldiers. There is no resting moment for the diverse companionship of the main characters and the story had many unexpected twists that kept my interest until the ending which is romantic and creates anticipation for the next book in the series.

The author’s writing style is nice but in my opinion some sentences could have transitioned in a more poetical way as it’s usual in fantasy genre.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read, it has some tiny little flaws that mainly have to do with it being the author’s debut book and I’d love to find out what’s next for Tridea’s children.

‘The Battle of the Erathiel: Across the Enchanted Sea’ by Constanza Mayer

REVIEW

They say that you judge the book by its cover. This is not the case with the book I’m featuring today.

The Battle of the Erathiel: Across the Enchanted Sea by Constanza Mayer is a lovely fantasy book which is not presented well by his cover. It’s way better than it seems to be.

The author has created a wonderful world which she describes with beautifully written vivid descriptions.

There are no scenes of bloodshed in this book, there is some violence but it doesn’t go into gory details, making it a read for all ages.

I loved the relationship Thinidiel and Nimtar shared, a Frigga – Odin kind of love, as I enjoyed the flirting game between Lothar and Eteri.

The story takes a twist when one of the characters has a unique, magical experience.

I was a bit surprised by the abrupt ending, I expected a smoother one, but I guess that when Volume Two comes out, readers will be able to read sequentially these two books and the way this book ends won’t matter anymore.

Overall, I enjoyed this ride to a magical elvish world and I can’t wait to read Volume II.

About the author

Constanza Mayer is a Chilean author. Born in Santiago, she spent most of her childhood living in different cities across Chile, until she finally settled down for many years in a small town in the state of Illinois. This is when she began to write her first fantasy novel, but it was sadly lost due to a computer virus.

After many years passed, having moved back to Santiago, Chile, she was finally able to write again. This is where “The Battle of the Erathiel” truly began to develop. After almost two years of hard work, and living for a time in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, she finishes the first novel of her series in Santiago on October 29th, 2016.

Constanza is an avid reader, a lover of the arts, and a devoted piano player and composer. Among her dreams, she hopes to continue traveling across the world to fill herself with more experiences to write from, as she typically says:
