Driving aimlessly through the stormy suburbs of San Francisco, Casey Wheeler is fleeing from her abusive and unfaithful husband with her five year old daughter Maddy asleep in the backseat.  With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, Casey loses control of her emotions and her car, crashing into a hillside below a mortuary.  Desperately seeking shelter, and more so independence, she finds herself taken in by the mortuary director who apprehensively offers her a job and a place to live.  As she stumbles through the ins and outs of her new and morbid surroundings, Casey is forced into a hostile custody battle with her relentless and increasingly violent husband.  In the midst of all the chaos, she finds a new family and even love in the eccentric and protective people of Golden Oaks Funeral Home.  But just when she has found all she could hope for, she will have to fight to the death to protect it.

This semiautobiographical story of a single-mother and her journey to self-discovery, independence and a true understanding of love will keep readers captivated and yearning for more.

author

Rebecca Fisher graduated with a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Education, and teaches High School English.  Her own experiences living in a mortuary in Northern California and raising her daughter on her own serve as the inspiration for the many macabre and candid encounters in her novel.  She lives in California with her husband and two daughters.

Their Tangled Hearts, a touching Christian love story

Mary DeWeber’s Their Tangled Hearts is a well written Christian book. It’s easy to read and the story is very touching. Both main characters have been through difficult situations, they’ve been traumatized and they had to find the way to restart their lives. The story is believable, according to the real life standards and the characters are in a very realistic setting. It’s a story about forgiving and it makes an excellent reading for teens. It’s about sincere love and it doesn’t include sex scenes. This book is also suitable for anyone who are about to take tough decisions and they’re ready for life changes.

The Big Wide Calm is like a glass of red wine

The Big Wide Calm is the first novel by Rich Marcello I’ve ever read. And definitely it won’t be the last. It’s a captivating novel that will engage you either you are interested in music industry or not.

The story sounds simple: Paige, a talented young woman tries to create multigenerational music and rise in the rock music stardome. But just as it happen in real life nothing is that simple after all.

The story moves fast and yet in a smooth pace. All characters are described wonderfully and they are so interesting with their flaws, their secrets, their passions, their questionable choices… Their relationships are complex and Rich Marcello’s vividly engaging writing style makes the reader get connected with them.

And there is food, lots of food.

Although there’re no shape shifters, werewolves, vampires or witty detectives in the story, this book is a page turner.

Reading The Big Wide Calm is like enjoying a glass of cold, red wine while watching the sun go down in the summertime. Rich Marcello’s writing is lyrical and at the same time easy to read, with humor (-“You’re going to die” – “There are worse things”) and unexpected shifts.

But this book’s main advantage is the female protagonist. Paige Plant is a character hard not to love.

In my opinion a sequel to this book would be highly recommended.
